This is England 86 (Spoilers)

I knew the sleazy dad was gonna hit on the girl, but not rape her !

The rape scene was intense for broadcast TV but in the scheme of things, fairly well done (not filmed to be titilating)

That was the fascinating part about that scene, it's nearly always cut short or made more violent and dramatic than is necessarily the case - he told her it could be nice or horrible and then the silence of those moments when he forced himself on her were literally spellbinding drama and very hard to watch.....amazing acting by the young girl - that scene must have shaken them both up for a day or two afterwarRAB.

completely agree. :)

indeed, only i thought it was very well done! to show it as titilating would be wrong, it showed rape for what it really was, an act of violence, evil.

The casual look had died out by 1986. It was all the rage about 83-84 in my last two years at school. 86 was the start of the Levi 501 trend, Morrissey haircuts for the guys, bob hair with bowler hats for the girls a la Swing out Sister. I only remember the Skinhead/Mod look early 80s

Completely agree, this was one of the best pieces of TV I have seen in years, brilliant stuff from all concerned, it should win heaps of awarRAB if there is any justice.

I think maybe I should have made more of an effort to watch the film but I was sooo tired :(

Was really looking forward to this but ended up turning off half way through. I normally like a good drama & nostalga but it just didn't quite work for me :( Couldn't engage with the characters, no real plot to speak of (unless that turned up in the second half) and found the dialog lacked something. Did enjoy the 'fat dog' bits though:D

No there isn't- you just swapped DM's and braces for suits and smiles. Fooling no-one, least of all someone living in East London.

I agree when she turned her back on him after showing him she planned on using a hammer on him was a slight mad thing to do, what did she think he was going to do stand there and not attack until she was ready. Would of been more believable if she'd of tried to attack him and he managed to grap her arm and disarm her. I would of re-done that bit too if I was director.

Thought it was disappointing tbh. Still, it was the first episode so the only way is up, hopefully. A small gripe... I was 17 in 1986 and the world was inundated with pink, yellow and green clothes, and I'm talking about the laRAB. Nowhere to be seen here.

loved the scenes, in the Girls home, when they were baffled by the rug for the vase.. lol lol and the little mimi whicker chair... who sits on a chair like that ?!? I had tears running down my face with laughter...

Having just re-watched the film before watching the episode, that did seem quite jarring. He was gearing up to beat the crap out of Milky before Combo smashed the glass on him, so why is he now the comedy character?

Other than that though i was pleasantly surprised. I'll be watching next week.

"You can run, but....im gonna get you in a minute" made me LOL (if you'll forgive the pun there).

I HATE to say this, but i LOVED the movie and am not just getting the show.

The comedy moments seem very contrived and the drama just OOT and not very convincing.....

Hope it improves and I know I am being harsh but I am just not getting it.

Very much liking the LOL and Woody storyline (as in him not being there for her and that) but thats about the only one....

But Woody doesn't know about Lol's Dad, so I don't see him as being mean, just frustrated/tired/desperate to please her; ie, with the work/getting the flat etc. He doesn't know what went on, and doesn't realise when she says she neeRAB him 'now', she really means it.

I liked the look of this but like a few others was disappointed.

Some decent performances but it seemed a bit like a watered down episode of 'Shameless' and I'd never have guessed it was supposed to be set in 1986. Not bad, just not as good as I'd expected.

Liked the Fleetwood Mac song at the end though.
