Is Consumer Behavior a Function of a Person's Age or Generation? take a side and then why?

I'd have to say that it is more a function of a persons generation, although there is definitely an interaction between the two.

Our tastes have developed based on our current cultural norms and the likes and dislikes of our peers. Older folks today are wearing polyester, but I would like to think that it is not a requirement of old age. When I am older, I'd like to think that I will not be relegated to that sort of attire based solely on how many decades I've been around.

Yes, of course it is! For one thing, experience accumulates with age, so older people usually know more about the products they might be interested in. Secondly, there is a difference in social pressure according to age. Teens are very much driven by social pressure to dress a certaina way and exhibit certain behaviors. Senior citizens are not likely to behave this way.

In terms of generation, people who experienced the depression are probably more cautious than those who didn't. You can find a similar selection for people who experienced world war 2 and those who didn't.
