Why would PalmOne do this other than to try to force users to buy their products exclusively?

Here take look at this:

SanDisk has revealed to rabroad its plans to release a Wi-Fi SD card for the Zire 71.

SanDisk would like to make this card compatible with other palmOne models, but it isn't getting the co-operation it needs. The Zire 72 and Tungsten T3 need to have a system patch applied before their SD slots can use this card. According to SanDisk, palmOne won't publicly release this. Instead, the patch will be built into the driver that palmOne will release with its Wi-Fi SD card, which is expected to be available soon. This patch isn't something SanDisk can develop itself, which means that the only option for Wi-Fi SD cards for the Zire 72 and Tungsten T3 is the one palmOne itself will sell.

SanDisk promises to try to make versions of all of its SD products compatible with as many palmOne products as possible. However, it says the lack of support from palmOne makes this difficult. SanDisk can't release its SD card that combines Wi-Fi and 256 MB of storage without further assistance from palmOne.

It seems like you've answered your own question. If PalmOne is bringing our thier own WiFi card, why would it make good business sense to just give Sandisk the software they need to compete with the PalmOne product? PalmOne owns the rights to the OS, not Sandisk, so they have every right to withhold any part of it they choose. You many not like it but this the way business works.
 
If I read it right, Palm will release the patch with their card. Doesn't that mean the SanDisk card will work once the patch is available?

I agree that Palm owns the source, but they advertise this as an SDIO slot. Must mean that the code doesn't fully support the SDIO STANDARD, which means either false advertising, or all T3 owners are entitled to the patch to make the slot compliant???
 
Since the split of PalmOne and PalmSource.....who is really responsible for "patches". PalmOne will argue that their devices are proprietary similar to either Sony's or Garmin's or any other manufacturer and as such they are not compelled to be compliant with any else's hardware.

It's kinda like a Ford using Chevy parts.....won't happen unless it's purely accidental and that's what PalmOne will argue.

They have disclaimers all over the web site stating that recommend using PalmOne accessories etc and this will get worse before it get's better. Think back to the Handspring days and everyone wanted Palm to build Springboards into their devices.......

SanDisk seems to be using "media" attention for not being able to figure out the specifics with the PalmOne devices. There are differences between the Zire 71 and the T3 with regards to the databases and as such PalmOne might consider these devices "proprietary" with some of the code and they don't want the world to know........

It isn't pretty but it is somewhat understandable.
 
One small positive about "lack of market freedom," in this particular case at least, is that YES, you'll have to wait for PalmOne's SD Card. That means it WON'T be manufactured by SanDisk. It will be made by PalmOne or Palm Source/outsourcing or a 3rd party other than SanDisk.

That alone would make me happy to wait -- it won't be a SanDisk.
 
i dont mind palmone or who ever can make it. just my 2 cents is that by the friggn time palm makes anything for the tt3 or other new product the product will be extinct. useless. they not really care if product has support or not. just build a flashy unit that they say has all features but caint be used cause they dont move off their butts to make them compatable with the market. still waiting for them to update the phone drivers. how long have they updated them hey......
 
PalmOne says October, which sounds pretty realistic compared to their usual release dates. The Zire 71 version is now shipping and it shouldn't be that difficult to make the system patch work with the T3.
 
Not only do they take an eternity, but are snotty all the time they're developing what should have been right at release, and by the time COMPETING ALTERNATIVES are available, they've changed the damn OS to make THAT more difficult too.

As other have said on here before me, SONY was a great "boon" to the process by lighting a fire under Palm's a**; now that option's gone too.

Hmmm . . . . . How big is a notepad Tablet PC again???!!

I agree - despite being only 6 months since I gotmy T3, Iwas in the shops looking at a trio/treo over the weekend. I take the point about waiting - without starting a wish list, a T3 style phone with inbuilt wi-fi would get my money straight away.
