Third films that ruin a movie franchise

Same here actually! :) I thought JP3 was pathetic and felt extremely rushed.

I don't understand this universal hate that Terminator 3 seems to have following it around these days, when it came out at the cinemas the general consensus was that it was "not as good as T2, but much better than it had any right to be". I still really enjoyed it, but agree it wasn't a patch on T2.

People who are saying that Alien 3 was bad should check out the Directors Cut on the 2 Disc SE DVD (okay, "Assembly Cut" considering David Fincher actually had nothing to do with), it's much better and more coherent with 30 minutes of extra footage spent on giving more back story to the main characters. Consequently, a better film, although i liked the theatrical cut too to be honest.

Nightmare on Elm Street 3 was pretty good imo, it was infinitely better than the dire second film.

Jaws 3 was abysmal though, i can't even attempt to defend that. I almost pissed myself laughing when the shark "floated" towarRAB the window without moving a muscle, it looked so unbelievably crap.

Another vote for Alien 3 here. Ripley and Hicks spend most of Aliens protecting Newt then Hicks and Newt are cheaply disposed of for Alien 3.

Poltergeist III is an awful film, and it has never deserved any kind of right whatsoever to be associated with the first two films. The original is a great film (my favourite film of all time as it happens) and their first attempt at a sequel while also decent, was already a vastly inferior sequel as it was. They had to go and "jump the shark" and make a complete crapfest of a second sequel didn't they?... oh well.

Terminator 3 is at the top of a very crappy heap - I almost ran to the cinema when it came out - almost needing to see it after the joy that was T2 - however, I emerged from the cinema more than pissed off, almost angry (i surprised myself with the emotions this film evoked - never thought I would be angry from a movie) horrible story that was created to elicit my (and everybody else who watched it) hard earned cash from my pocket in return for 'fluff' - the biggest load of excrement since Rambo 3 - yet another franchise ruined by greedy executives wishing to fleece fans. I quite liked X-Men 3 though and the 3rd Die Hard - but then I am a fan of Sam Jackson, so I was always gonna like it:)

I disagree about Final Destination 3. I thought that FD2 was a necessary but poorly executed sequel. There was almost a made-for-TV feel about it which made it very disappointing viewing. FD3 however, although based on a quite implausible premise, seemed to be more of a return to what the first film demonstrated. It was much stronger than the second film in my opinion.

I thought American Pie 3 seemed a bit surplus-to-requirements. It's almost like they were trying very hard to scrape together enough gross-out jokes to make it seem like the original film and not a slushy romantic comedy about marriage and the balance between the two seemed to teeter uncontrollably throughout the film. In some ways the second could have been for development, the third for closure but needless to say the fourth and fifth films were completely unnecessary.

Sorry to sound somewhat cynical but...
* 'Shrek the Third' - already director Andrew Stanton of the first 2 has moved away from it leaving the now recently split Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz to star in it.
* 'Spider-man 3' - for those that haven't seen the trailer yet we already know that ...
The story has foolishly been altered so that Sandman killed Uncle Ben in the first film, not the guy whom we thought, which in turn makes Peter's awkard confession to Aunt May in no. 2 seem a little bit unecessary now
* 'Ocean's 13' - Julai Roberts is not involved!
* 'POTC3' - Disney plan to make it a family film, dare you read the spoiler...
Keith RicharRAB is to play Captain Jack's father!

It's missing Danny Elfman. :(

By now can some of you guys see that movies can have a 'number three syndrome'?

That would be why Superman Returns is a sequel to Superman II. It's rather a "if you ignore them, maybe they will go away" mentality with III and IV.

Final Dest. 3 awful
Godfather 3 pretty weak
Spiderman 3 wasnt as groundbreakin as it should have bin
Matrix 3 haaaahahaaa crap

But Goldmember the film every1 has been slating i think is absolutly fab, and i love it.

I am quite childish tho and the jokes are corny but i love to laugh.

I watch films with a positive attitude and try not to focus on weak spots so i dont always come out of films disappointed... UNLESS THEY ARE UTTER PANTS

The Godfather Part III (had so much to live up to, not a bad movie if you look at it alone, but nowhere near the same level when compared to the first two).

Jaws 3 (total nonsense)

I did like Superman III though - Gus Gorman has to be one of the best movie character's of all-time.

"SIT ON WHAT! YOU SIT ON PLASTIC, MOULDED SEATS! MOULDED TO YOUR WELL-FED BEHINRAB" - Gus

"WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT, HUH" - Evil Superman

"I CAN GIVE AS GOOD AS I GET" - Clark Kent

"COME ON COME ON COME ON" - Evil Superman

Alien 3. (An absolute, crying shame, wasted opportunity)
Blade Trinity (Ok I love Jessica Biel but the movie was not a patch on the first 2)
Terminator 3 (arnie should have never comeback)

Thanks for the link, it looks more like a sequel to, er, the sequel, pretty much everyone from the second movie except Jennifer Saunders and as mentioned, different director.

Not really, you're just expressing your opinion that often second films, particularly in designed franchsies are worse. I believe 'Total Film' Magazine, or some other mag once said the hard part of making the prequel 'Star Wars' films was that we knew how it all ended.
In other worRAB, the beginning and end of a story is simple, the hard part was just getting from point A to point B.
I still tend to dislike third films though as they are either too different from previous ones, too similar or everything seems like its coming to an end which you get sick of after a while, e.g. 'X-men III'.

I found Matrix 3 a bit crap to be honest.. the ending irritated the hell outta me!

With X-men 3 the thing that annoyed me most about the story was how some of the characters were barely involved even if they had been highly involved in the first two (also, i still dont understand what the point in including the guy with wings was... all he seemed to do was save his dad in a real lame bit)

I actually didnt like the third harry potter film either.. but i dont actually know why i didnt like it when i saw it. I think too much was cut from the book (that was needed for the plot) for me to enjoy the story and the plotline. Then again i didnt mind the fourth harry potter that much!

the lord of the rings trilogy is a different "kind" of trilogy - its one simple long story broken up into 3.

but there are some terrible "3rd" movies.

i hate it when they carry a franchise on when they shouldnt be -

Alien films for instance. ( The Terminator franchise as well now!)

Alien 3 was bad. Ripley's death always brought a tear to my eye. But Alien4 is pointless. but Ripley only dies because S.Weaver said "no more, kill me off" so they did. then they offered more money, thus Alien4. I still refer to the Alien films as a "trilogy" and tend to forget Alien4 existed.

Blade 3 was awful as well.
