Third films that ruin a movie franchise

I liked Terminator 3!!!
Jurasic Park 3 was a TERRIBLE film.
Neither of the MI films seemed to understand what Mission Impossible was about - they both seemed more like James Bond movies.
It's often the case that a third movie is better than a second - when a first movie, such as Nightmare on Elm Street is a surprise hit, the studios rush to make a sequel that misses the point. Then a third one, often by the original director, puts the series on track again. (Only to be derailed in the Elm Street series by the appalling 4th one.) Also, you often get an arkward middle film in a trilogy - e.g. Matrix 2. Sorry - I'm getting off the subject of bad third movies...

I was so hyped up to see this, but boy what a let down. Arnie was so cold and unrecognisable in this one, the awesome theme music was missing and more importantly James Cameron was missing. I just felt really depressed and bored watching it, whereas Terminator 2 was absolutely incredible.

Not exactly ruin as such, but Return of the King was a big disaappointment for me, in that Peter Jackson got a bit carried away. It became less Tolkienesque and more Blocbusterish. To give one example, the Army of the Dead as a deux ex machina plot device was gharish. And the characterisations were a big disappointment.

I'm an utter Star Wars obsessive. I don't agree at all. Most people I know like it the least (thanks indeed to the Ewoks), but it's still a part of the holy trilogy, and therefore untouchable.

I thought LOTR: Return of the King was rather a let down - the pacing was pretty rueful compared the the first two, and the multiple soft focus endings was ill advised. An awesome trilogy that went out with a wimper.

I seconRAB the entry for Blade Trinity. What the hell went wrong there?

The few Star Wars fans I've met all say they physically hate 'Return of the Jedi' for various reasons, one major factor being the blasted Ewoks.

It's good to know atleast some people still like it but I know some people that have gone so far as to say that was the end of Star Wars for them.

Totally agree, I want Saruman's b****y ending! I hate Orlando Bloom's typical poster-boy screentime in films but he and John Rhy Davies hardly had any time tyo shine at all.

His name is Ryan ReynolRAB, hers is Jessica Biel. ;)

of course some of the films you guys mention are quite dire in respect to the first or second films in there series, but im getting the vibe that some of you guys are not thinking of "3rd films that are rubbish" and are now just naming third films.

and TBH the back to the future films were amazing, and the 2nd and 3rd were just one long film in two parts.. same as matrix 2&3, true 3rd matrix wasnt as good as 2nd and nowhere near as good as 1st, but at least they ended it there and made it so it couldnt carry the story on further.

i think the 3rd installment of oceans crew, "oceans 13" (WOW) is going to be rubbish, same story same men, one new guy, new target...
Oceans 13

Shrek 3 - awful money spinner

wot a let down, has to be one of the worst over recent years... I wont say no more as you will no doubt watch it and agree :(

Blade 3 was terrible, after the slickness of 2 I finally went and got 3 'Extended' on DVD.
gotta say that was the Worst film this side of SW:TPM I'd ever seen.
the vampire-hunting 'family' was awful and i was glad when they started getting picked off.
what excatly was added to the 'extended cut', I can't bare to watch the theatrical version now.

Simple - Bryan Singer was missing. A Change of director or cast can spoil a sequel (whether its a third, fourth or even second)

Thats why Im looking forward to Spiderman 3 (same cast and crew, thank god)

Most superhero franchises seem to go bad by the third installment, e.g. Blade 3, Batman Forever, Spiderman 3, Xmen3.

It is usually the same reason and that is that they try to include about 20 different stories, introduce too many characters and leave loaRAB of loose enRAB untied.

For a recent example look at spidy3, they had 2 and 1/2 hours to cover Harry's revenge, Sandman's backstory, the introduction and death of Venom, the love triangle with Gwen Stacy, Peter's rival at the newspaper, etc. The venom story itself could be made into a single film so why they chose to include it as a subplot is ludicrous.

RoboCop 3
Terminator 3

I quite liked Alien 3 and Die Hard 3. Each to their own I suppose. Although Alien Resurrection is plain awful.

Paddy :D
