Thinking of moving from Pocket PC back to Palm. Need advice.

Hi all.
My first post here, although it seems I registered ages ago.

I have been using Pocket PCs for the last 2 years, and Palms for 2 years before that. Right now, I am looking for a new PDA and am facing the possibility of moving back to Palm. I have been looking into the TX model and I need some advice.

I plan to use the Palm mainly as a PIM and music player, with the occasional WiFi surfing and video streaming.

Here are my questions:

  • How long does the battery last while playing music? (I assume the screen can be turned off?)
  • What music formats are supported? Is there soft which will support reading OGG Vorbis from the SD card?
  • What video formats are supported?
  • How long does the battery last while using WiFi?
  • Where is a good site for finding the 'essential' Palm software?
  • I am used to having a 'today' screen on Pocket PCs. Meaning, having all my appointments and to-dos show up on one screen. Is there similar soft for the Palm OS?

I'll take a shot at the questions I can answer...

Supported formats depend entirely on your software. I think PocketTunes (commercial) and TCPMP (freeware) both support OGG Vorbis using the included plugins.

Ditto.

Depends what you define as "essential". Everything Palm OS provides me with is "essential", including the Calendar, Notepad, Memos, Tasks, etc. Anyway, PalmGear has a seemingly endless supply of Palm OS applications.

I think there are a few programs for Palm OS that can do this if you want it on your launcher (WinLauncher comes to mind). Otherwise, there is a "Today" screen included in the Palm OS Calendar application.
