i have a degree in visual arts and media arts from 2002 now im considering studying photography. Its a passion of mine i already have a pretty good portfolio, the only thing im thinking is....

is it worth it?
what doors can it open?

anybody know?

Art directors don't care if you can spell "photography." They care if you can deliver the image they want before the deadline and on budget.

Whenever I was hiring photographers I was always more than a little suspicious of one that came bearing some heavy sheepskin. I want to see the PORTFOLIO, and the degree just meant he probably had an attitude. And they did. The best photographers learned what they needed to know in the streets the way God and George Eastman intended.

I know a few people who have their MFA's in Photography and they are teachers. As far as I know, that is one of the only doors that it will open for you, besides being more respected by your peers, and possibly being able to do guest lectures. The question really is, do you want to be a college prof.?

An M.A. won't open any doors on its on. An M.F.A is a terminal degree and will allow you to teach at the college level. An M.A is the degree to get if you only want the knowledge or you are going to go all the way to a PhD.
