supposed to bring someone's car? to the machanic?

If i was selling a car, i would never let someone take my car to a mechanic - i might never see the car again, or they might damage my car, or make up lies about it.

But how could someone bring a mechanic to your house? No mechanic would leave his garage just to check out some stranger's car would he? Not to mention he can't bring any of his fancy equipment along.

What's the deal with this advice?

If a seller doesn't want you to take a car to YOUR mechanic, it means he or she (the seller) has something to hide. Of course, it may just be the case they are afraid to loose the car.
I'd NEVER buy a used car without my trusted mechanic checking it out. Actually, the last time I bought a used car I did take it to my mechanic. The seller made a copy of my drivers license and my insurance card and let me go. And I left the car I came in with the seller. No problem (and it was a Mercedes I was buying.)
If you want to BRING your mechanic, he'll go if you pay him. He can do it after he closes his garage.

You go with the person and your car. I would not buy a car that the seller would not allow to be checked by a shop.

you should definitely have the car checked out by a mechanic AT the shop. Dealers usually have no problem letting you take the car if you are really interested. And private sellers could take a collateral if they are not so trusting, or they could go to the shop with the potential buyer. If i was buying a car and a seller would not let me take the car to a shop, i would walk away, that hints toward something serious being wrong with the car they don't want you to find out.

I've done this with every used car I've ever bought. Before the test drive, I say, "I always take used cars to my mechanic before I buy, would that be all right?"

If the answer is "no", I say, "have a nice day" and move on.

I own a small shop. Once or twice a week someone will come in with a car they are wanting to buy for us to check out. The owner of the car (or dealer) is always with.

If you know about cars then you don't have to take this step. If you dont know about cars then it can be VERY helpful.

We normally only charge $30 to give it a good once over. Takes 15-30 minutes.
