There is no such thing as mental illness. Discuss.?

An illness refers to some definable damage for which tests can be performed. There are no blood tests for any so-named "mental illness". Neurological problems exist. Insanity certainly exists ... we see this every day. But acquired fears and bad choices we make in this life do NOT constitute sickness. Psychological problems used to come under the headings of "guilt" or "sin". Perhaps as some evolutionary biologists have pointed out depression is simply a form of contrition that sometimes does not work. I believe there are circumstances where suicide might be justified where terminal physical illness is not present. Put another way if the big "D" does constitute a "disease" in some minds why can't there be such a thing as terminal depression?
Also claiming that anyone who opposes psychiatry must be in league with the scientologists in equally suspect. It's like two dictators who dislike each other and "we" are asked to chose between them. The enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend!! Also name calling as in the first response doesn't cut it. I never said that people do not have very serious psychological problems but these do not constitute a "sickness".

Does it really matter what the NAME of it is? You can call a mental illness an ice cream truck, but it still exists. Many are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, others are unknown, but that doesn't make people suffer any less from them.

There are all sorts of illnesses for which the cause is not known. It doesn't make them any less real to the person who has them. And the brain is the most complex organ in the body, there's so much medical science doesn't understand about it. Come back when you understand all the workings of the brain thoroughly and we'll discuss. Until then a reasonable discussion is impossible.
