TheJackson 5 cartoon should be released on DVD

Since all the Jackson brothers (including Michael) are reuniting for an up coming concert tour, Entertainment Rights ought to release The Jackson 5 cartoon series on DVD. What do ya'll think?

Nobody would recognize the cartoon Jackson 5 as being the same people as the real life Jacksons, least of all Michael. Back then he was a 10-year-old black boy; the cartoon was made before he mutated into a middle-aged white woman. :anime:

First off, I don't think E-R has the rights to Jackson 5's 'toon. They bought Filmation's library, not Rankin-Bass'. R-B, the studio that made the J5 show, is more known for its Xmas specials (like Rudolph) and Thundercats.

I also imagine it's harder to get a show based on real people put out, particularly if it's perceived as an embarassment. J5 did air on VH1 some years back, though.

A DVD release of this series will never happen. First, there's the problem of securing the rights. Since the Jacksons are now several distinct legal entities instead of "The Jackson Five", royalty distributions just on the use of their images will be a logistic nightmare, never mind negotiating for the rights to the music, which is own be a seperate company and will have to be negotiated separately. Then there's the really dicey problems like: a) Michael Jackson doesn't what people to be reminded of what he used to look like because it makes it harder to perpetuate the fantasy that he's never had plastic surgery, and b) the allegations of pedophilia levelled against him will stick to everything with which he is associated.

I think we'd just better chalk this up to one of those "lost shows".

Maybe Jermaine Jackson could talk to some people about putting it on DVD. Like I said before, Entertainment Rights has a deal with Classic Media (that owns most of the Rankin-Bass stuff from the 60's to early 70's).

One member of the group can't make decision for the whole group. Each would have to give permission to use their likenesses. Ain't gonna happen.

What about NBC Universal, since they own Motown Records (where the Jackson 5 originally recorded) that company could release the entire Jackson 5 cartoon series on DVD!

Except they'd also have to get permission from the Jacksons themselves, as they provided their own voices and the characters were based on their own likenesses. It's also worth mentioning that the brothers haven't been going by the name 'The Jackson Five' for several years now, and Michael's image in particular has changed quite a bit since then. Re-read The Weed of Cri's initial post above.

I hate to correct you, Silverstar, but the Jacksons' animated counterparts were voiced by other actors. The brothers were way too busy to do the cartoon.

*looks up clips of Jackson 5ive cartoon*

Good lord, this is the worst show I've ever seen. Worse than Max Steel, even.

I say, let it stay lost.

The Jackson 5ive was a Rankin-Bass/Motown co-production, distributed through Worldvision in the late 70's. As for reissuing it now? Kind of difficult. There have been rumors of a J5 reunion tour, which would cost fans 2 arms, 2 legs, and an extra muscle or two if it hit my area.:p ;) That's the way they're raising ticket prices these days. They want no less than $30-$45 dollars for upper deck seats, for example, at Times-Union Center in Albany. Chris Rock is playing the Palace in Albany at the end of the year, and they want anywhere from $45-75 for tix. That is wrong, and the price gouging has to stop!

Back to the Jacksons. I think the family might have the rights to the series themselves, so it might be their call, not R/B, Entertainment Rights, or any other entity, to issue the DVD.

Oh, and Veemonjosh? If you thought the J5 sucked as toons, what about the Osmonds a year later (same studio & network)?

Jackson 5ive cartoon. Firstly, how do you pronounce the 5 in 5ive? Fiveive?

Secondly, I wouldn't doubt that some collectors would like a Jackson Fiveive cartoon. There are Michael Jackson completists, as any fan base has them. I remember hearing MTV reran it for a period in the 80's when Mike's solo career was taking off.

But then again, no one attempted to release the Beatles cartoon to DVD (or even rerelease or keep in print Yellow Submarine), and the Beatles are the biggest band of all time. If Elvis had a cartoon, you'd believe they'd release that (and I'm not talking the obscure EMTV series "Lil Elvis" I happened to catch on the Spanish Channel once).

But would I buy a Jackson Fiveive DVD? NO! I wouldn't even watch it free on Youtube at this point. I kinda liked it when I was a kid, but I wouldn't watch it now.

As one of the first made-for-television cartoons to feature African-Americans as lead characters, I think that alone (plus it being, well, the Jacksons) might merit putting it on DVD. If all those toy commercials-as-shows from the 80s like "He-man" and "GI Joe" can get a DVD release, well... :-p

Not seen the show in quite awhile (last time I saw it IIRC it was either on BET or VH-1), but yeah, don't recall it being hugely stellar (aside from the Jackson Five's classic songs used in the show of course---and promoting said songs/the group the reason the show was created in the first place).

-B.

NBC Universal also owns the rights to the 1970's MGM recordings by the Osmond family, maybe with Rankin-Bass help they could put the entire Osmonds cartoon series on DVD besides the Jackson 5.

And what company could release DVD sets of these animated cartoon music stars?:
New Kids on the Block (maybe Sony?)
The Beatles (maybe BCI if they get the rights from Capitol Records)
Hammerman with M.C. Hammer (FOX or Shout! Factory)
Kid 'N Play (FOX or Shout! Factory)

For fans of Rick Springfield: the complete Mission! Magic DVD series is currently available.
