My views on the movie (from the thread in "Cult"):
So... I think I should have gone to see The Dark Knight a 2nd time instead of seeing this.
Two worRAB: Lame. Disappointing.
I loved the series. I watched it from the very beginning on Sky 1, & again on the Beeb. I had most on VHS, & recently bought the complete 1-9 + FTF DVD box set.
It's been six years since the series ended. Six years for Carter & co to come up with a decent & worthwhile return to the big screen. And yet THIS is all they could come up with?! This... average & mediocre non-arc ep stretched to feature length?...
While it's good to see Mulder & Scully again, the reason for their return is pathetic. The AICN links were true...
someone even does actually say "All is forgiven". It's so lame. They've been on the run for 6 years (well, I say "run", but Scully is working at a hospital under her own name, while a beardy Mulder works out of a room in their house), Mulder still has a military-imposed death sentence hanging over him, and yet some sexy little Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) is somehow able to make it so that "All is forgiven" & all charges are dropped etc., simply 'cos she wants Mulder's help with a psychic paedo-priest who claims he can help the Bureau find a missing Agent. How in the hell can a mere ASAC clear all charges against Mulder, simply out of needing his help in that? And even if she could somehow clear the FBI side, how could she clear the whole military death-sentence side of it? LAME.
The story is lame & a bit boring. Nothing worthy of a movie.
Leoben from BSG is a Russian organ smuggler or something, along with his freaky-looking husband [in the State of Massachusetts] & some other Russians. The freaky husband is dying of cancer, so Leoben & the other Russians have been kidnapping young women with the aim of using their bodies to give the freaky-looking Russian a head/body transplant...stick his head on the kipnapped woman's body.
It's lame, not particularly interesting, & nothing special. Certainly nothing worth waiting SIX DAMN YEARS FOR.
The secondary story, regarding Scully &
the little dying boy in the hospital
was to me simply a load of pointless filler, to stretch out the movie as the main story couldn't fill the run time. OK, maybe it was intended to be an important part of the movie, to deal with Scully's faith. But to me it came across as boring filler. Scully's faith has been dealt with better in the series.
And of course the "Shipper" numpties get what they want.
There is one brief mention of William. That's it.
Skinner is in it briefly. He seems to still be in a position of power at Washington (guess no-one minded him helping break-out Mulder back at the end of the series).
And the end-credits has the bit mentioned in the AICN links...
Mulder & Scully in a little boat on holiday or something, waving up at the camera
...WTF?
There are also little bits that seem like maybe they're done for laughs, but they're simply utter crap, such as the theme music playing over a pic of Dubya & J Edgar Hoover.
Massive let down
Two thumbs down.
Also, there was one bit in particular that made no sense to me...
When Scully has inadvertently discovered the whole "Russian transplant experiment" thing while searching for stuff on stem cell therapy, she phones Mulder & leaves him a message saying something like "the Agent is not dead!" or "the Agent is still alive!". This is despite the Agent's SEVERED HEAD previously being found in a coolbox by Special Agent Xzibit - something Scully & Mulder knew of. Why on Earth does Scully think the Agent is alive / not dead, if her head has been cut off & found in a coolbox?!
Given that most X-Files episodes are better than your average movies I was expecting a lot. It wasn't as good as I thought it could be, I like the conspiracy stuff, but I still enjoyed the film, but felt the pace was slow and M&Ss long heart to heart was someewhat distracted by the loud explosions from the movie next door (Wall-E).
Let's hope in the next movie they build up the alien invasion and have a final movie released shortly before the date of 22 December 2012. And get mor of the old characters in it, Lone Gunmen, Cigarette Smoking Man, Alex Krycek, Deep Throat etc.
Was I the only one who thought Mulder and Scully looked OLD!
Such a shame this film sounRAB awful. I've just been getting into th series again and was looking forward to a revival. Got to say, I won't be watching this film, especially since it's got Billy bloody Connolly in it.
I'm really looking forward to this and have managed to remain pretty much spoiler free, thanks to my muchused method of putting my hanRAB in front of my face during trailers at the cinema
Your post genuinely made me laugh! I thought that was really funny!
I love you!
I'm also looking forward to the X-Files movie. Gillian Anderson is such a babe, more so now than back in the X-Files days. Although what Billy Connely is doing in this i have no idea! I do not like this man in any films whatsoever. It better be a good story otherwise i'll be really disappointed!
I was watching Mulder and i noticed when the camera had close-ups of his face you could see his wrinkles, i thought damn he looks old. Not so much with Scully but yeah that's definetely true.
it is strange, i thought the exact same thing watching the film, but before i watched the film, i had seen interveiws with them (ie the richard and judy one, the alison hammond one with david etc,) and thought they looked younger, especially gillian
Hmm yeah, that was a bit kinda bizarre. She had an English accent in 'StraightheaRAB' but obviously, you know, she's in a film and I thought she changed her accent for it on purpose. But then I saw her in an interview for it at the time and she sounded all posh and British. And now she's back to American again!
I agree with the poster who said she's even more of a babe now. There were a few ebay auctions last week to win 2 tickets to the premiere and meet her in person. Was so tempted to blow all my cash on that
I had really high hopes for this film, I loved The X Files, is probably up there as one of my all time fave. programmes so hearing all the negative reviews of it so far makes me really annoyed actually, It can't be as bad as you're all saying...surely?
Why would Carter destroy the franchise with somethin' so bad. Will go and watch it when it comes out anyway so will reserve judgement til' then, however Billy Connolly in there does not seem right, that sets off the warnin' bells in my head already!
