he could have somehow kept people from acting like wild animals in the superdome...

on second thought, i dont think that could have been helped

Thanks for the video. It actually makes me like Obama more. I'm glad he stayed out of the Oil mess. It allowed BP to do its job. Obama getting the federal government even more involved would have screwed things up more.

You guys make my point. Myopic partisan morons on either side want to put inane, impossible conditions on politicians, who are by and large only concerned with their personal power and aggrandizement.

What do I want him to do?

He's a leader right? He's supposed to lead the nation, which happens to be the very same nation that will be most affected by this disaster that happened off the shores by an international company.

Now, in what capacity can he lead the nation? Well, let's step back and see what a leader is. There are many definitions, and for all intents and purposes I'll choose Aristotle's definition: one who has ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos = his moral character, which is the source from which he draws his ability to persuade, pathos = to reach people emotionally and logos = his ability to give solid reasons for his actions and to reach people intellectually. Now, none of those qualities includes physical or financial applications, which is what people continue to think of when we think of government. It's unfortunate that we are limited to that in the first place. So now we understand what a leader is.

How can this be applied in this situation? Well I'm sure there are many forms, but the most important is applying them directly to the people and economies that will be affected by this disaster. There is not just one state that will be affected, it will be a numer of states, and many more that depend on the economies within those states. That makes this a national catastrophe, which means it's fully within the jurisdiciton of the federal government. In this case, he can very easily reach out to the people in a way that says "hey, we are a nation of many talents, many skills, and great pride...we've been through a lot worse, while this is a great tragedy, this too will pass, and we'll go on stronger htan before blah blah blah". That would be a good start. That's not him giving out money or "saving" people, it's him leading. That would have been desired on day 1.

That said, anything that would help the situation or make it easier would be helpful. Kevin Costner has spent 25 million of his own money to make these cool machines that separate oil from water. But he's waiting on approval from the regime. The states have things they want to do but the regime won't let them. All of this red tape and "no's" the regime keeps handing out only belittle the efforts and degrade morale. That is not leadership, that is counterproductive and only hurts his people.

That's what he could and should do. That said, he doesn't have a record of doing that. he has a record for apologizing for his people. He has a history of belittling his country. He has a history of not leading. So it would be counterproductive to assume he would suddenly lead in this circumstance. He's likely to make it a political situation, he's likely to base their new bills off it, he's likely to pander ot special interest groups, and he's likely to sue and tax and all that stuff. That's what our leader of today does, and he'll take credit for any good that does happen. Asshole.

Sure, he's fine staying out of the cleanup process.

Unfortunately, he's completely disconnected from the economic and other turmoil to be experienced by the people he SHOULD care about...the US. While BP is responsible for the specific mess, there is no reason he can't reach out to those affected by it, the very same people he is to "lead".

Cut the fluff. How should he 'reach' out to those people? By giving them money? By giving them a speech from his teleprompter? Anything he will do will be condemned or mocked by the likes of you. So just what exactly should he do?

I actually wasted my time reading that. The only concrete thing you believe he should have done is give a speech. The rest was political spin and bullshit.

I've followed your posts over the years. I've got a fairly good grasp on who you are, politically.

11 people died on tihs accident. What did Bush do when people died? He visited and consoled the families. What does Obama do? He golfs. Giving out money is not the role of president, leading and inspiring is. You don't have to give formal speeches or throw out money to do something worthwhile.

I'ts not an all-or-nothing kind of thing. Yeah, I don't like him, but think for one second what a real leader would do. Whether nationally or even in the private industry.

If my father dies, I don't want the fucking President coming and 'consoling' me.

Think about what you are saying for a moment. Because a few workers died on an oil rig, the President should personally meet with these families?

Because a President leads his country, the government is merely a medium for doing so.

personally he should stay out of it, i agree. however, i think its funny he goes after bush for not getting involved, and then doesn't get involved himself. i agree with his position, but it does seem to make him rather hypocritical...not that we haven't expected that already

he was there may 2nd and he was there yesterday...what do you expect him to do personally?

The president's job in a situation like this should be fairly obvious.

He should gather all of the leading experts on how to deal with something like this, put them with BP, and make sure they have everything they need to try to stop the blowout. Priority 1, stop the spill.

Once it's stopped, you put a shitload of unemployed people together to address the cleanup, and you make sure BP gets the bill. The government is actually capable of doing this.

You don't point fingers. We'll be hearing the he said she said shit for the next 20 years about this one. The president needs to rise above the issue itself. Use the disaster to bring people together instead of using to divide people further. let the people know someone is in charge and that they are just as concerned about the situation as the people are.

Don;t go on vacation. Don't play politics. Lead.

I may not like many of Obama's policies, but this crap about how he should "do something" is silly. He's the president. He's not a scientist specializing in deep water operations. There is nothing he can do other than ensure BP and administration officials do the best they can.

how do you know he hasn't and just didn't make a show of it? Considering how if he did people like you would say it was insincere blah blah blah

remember when people bitched that he "didn't visit the families" of the fort hood shootings:

The president and first lady Michelle Obama began an afternoon of consolation by meeting privately with family members of those killed last week and with those wounded in the attack and their families.
