What do I want him to do?
He's a leader right? He's supposed to lead the nation, which happens to be the very same nation that will be most affected by this disaster that happened off the shores by an international company.
Now, in what capacity can he lead the nation? Well, let's step back and see what a leader is. There are many definitions, and for all intents and purposes I'll choose Aristotle's definition: one who has ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos = his moral character, which is the source from which he draws his ability to persuade, pathos = to reach people emotionally and logos = his ability to give solid reasons for his actions and to reach people intellectually. Now, none of those qualities includes physical or financial applications, which is what people continue to think of when we think of government. It's unfortunate that we are limited to that in the first place. So now we understand what a leader is.
How can this be applied in this situation? Well I'm sure there are many forms, but the most important is applying them directly to the people and economies that will be affected by this disaster. There is not just one state that will be affected, it will be a numer of states, and many more that depend on the economies within those states. That makes this a national catastrophe, which means it's fully within the jurisdiciton of the federal government. In this case, he can very easily reach out to the people in a way that says "hey, we are a nation of many talents, many skills, and great pride...we've been through a lot worse, while this is a great tragedy, this too will pass, and we'll go on stronger htan before blah blah blah". That would be a good start. That's not him giving out money or "saving" people, it's him leading. That would have been desired on day 1.
That said, anything that would help the situation or make it easier would be helpful. Kevin Costner has spent 25 million of his own money to make these cool machines that separate oil from water. But he's waiting on approval from the regime. The states have things they want to do but the regime won't let them. All of this red tape and "no's" the regime keeps handing out only belittle the efforts and degrade morale. That is not leadership, that is counterproductive and only hurts his people.
That's what he could and should do. That said, he doesn't have a record of doing that. he has a record for apologizing for his people. He has a history of belittling his country. He has a history of not leading. So it would be counterproductive to assume he would suddenly lead in this circumstance. He's likely to make it a political situation, he's likely to base their new bills off it, he's likely to pander ot special interest groups, and he's likely to sue and tax and all that stuff. That's what our leader of today does, and he'll take credit for any good that does happen. Asshole.
