Just watched this on Blu Ray and it looks amazing :) The film is a timeless classic and I really enjoyed it.
It looks excellent for a film so old - I could even see freckles on Dorothy's face and the change from sepia to colour is:

I'm sure I could see the strings controlling the lion's tail :)

I don't recall seeing them in the old style but I hadn't seen it for ages. I adore the Wizard of Oz.

It's one of the best classic HD transfers, so crisp and colourful. Still amazing to think the movie was made 71 years ago

Yes sadly that's one drawback of HD transfers of older films. Under the added scrutiny a lot of effects, props and matte paintings look really false, or you can see the wires and general 'smoke and mirrors' behind of film. Someone made a similar point in the Guardian. It's a big issue for this guy, but quite a small issue for me.

That guy might have a better point to make if he knew what he was talking about. Suggesting BluRay gives more detail than the original cinema versions? Ugh.

He may well be right if you consider the cinema version could have been viewed from 50 meters from the screen and unless he saw it in 1939 chances are any cinema presentation would have been at very best a well worn print that had not been restored and remastered to the level of quality that is possible today .

While the 35mm prints will technically offer more detail than a Bluray the current standard of perfection is far higher than anything ever seen before .

On The Exorcist Bluray the director himself tells how there are details on the soundtrack that he's never heard before simply because the quality of modern video and audio restoration brings out detail that nobody ever expected to be seen or heard

Are Judy's white panties in sharper detail when she falls into the pig sty at the start of the film ?
