The Wicker Man - Rubbish ?

Christopher Lee rates it as his best ever role.

Once again - this is a film that neeRAB to be viewed in the context of when it was made.

In 1973 this was stirring stuff but obviously a direct comparison to todays films makes it fairly lightweight.
 
No, The Wicker Man is an intelligent, subtle and worthy film which is more than can be said for The Exorcist, released at about the same time and a turgid piece of schlock horror that has for some reason been elevated to a Cinema Classic.

The otherwise sane Mark Kermode thinks it's a masterpiece.
 
Most people's tastes change over the years so its pretty pointless saying "I watched ****** 15 years ago and it was crap"

Your appreciation of film will have changed a lot in that time.

I've got all the films I've ever enjoyed since I was a kid on dvd or Bluray and unsurprisingly some stand up today and some just don't have the magic they had when I saw them all those years ago.

Seeing The Exorcist when it came out at the cinema or during the early 80's when it was legally available on video would have been a different experience to watching it again since it was passed by the BBFC 10 years ago
 
Very true, Tackycomment. I have done the same - watched with great anticipation a "favourite" film from earlier times only to be a little disappointed.

That is not the case with The Wicker Man, though! I think I appreciate it more now, than when I first saw it. The subtleties are more apparent now.

As someone said earlier, Christopher Lee is excellent in the part of Lord Summerisle. I gather there is a sequel ( not a remake) being made (The Wicker Tree) and it will be interesting to see how that compares with the original
