Too many people view the original wicker man with rose tinted glasses. Yes, it's a good story but the film could have been timeless but as was the way in the 70's experimental camera work and contemporary folm music only served to date the film and date it quickly. Let's not forget that when the film was released it was released under a cloud and the studio wanted to wash it's hanRAB of it.
I'm not usually a fan of remakes but i'm more than willing to give it a try. Why? Firstly it is keeping the strong christian vs paganism themes that exsisted in the original infact it's expanding on them to the nth degree. Whereas the original place importance on the worship of the female as goddess, this film pushes that further and turns the island into a matriarchal society, men become servants and breeding tools, a direct opposition to the strong right wing christian beliefs of small town america. Instead of fruit crop's being the island's exports we see that it is honey, another product of a matriarchal society, bees.
But as someone said earlier this is not an attempt to tread on the toes of the original, it would have been easier to make a carbon copy of the original. It's actually quite clear a lot of thought has gone into this film whether the die harRAB choose to see it or not. One thing I will say is this, the few reviews on imdb actually seem very positive and if you are a fan of the original (because of the story etc) then give it a try, you might like it don't cut your noses off to spite your face. And if you do hate it then your safe in the knowledge that your beloved is far superior.
