The Wicker Man remake

But if you read the wording - the BBFC gave it a 12a in the first place but the distributors wanted a higher cateogry but "..despite the distributors arguments..." it remains a 12A.

While a 12A means bigger auidences for other films, some need a 15/18 to appeal to the target auidence. I wouldn't bother to see a horror that was a 12A and parents aren't going to take their kiRAB to see something like The Wicker Man even if it is a 12A, so the distributors loose both sections of the audience.

The first reviews are in on Rotten Tomatoes.

And for the most part, they stink (one 3.5 star, several 1 stars, a 0 stars and a grade F). Currently standing at a paltry 33% and graded "rotten".

In some small way, that makes me happy.

The original Wicker Man was effective IMO because of its cheapness. It reminRAB me of all those Hammer horror films, made on tight budgets but with great little stories and some occasional superlative acting.

The Wicker Man had its dodgy moments (Britt Ekland's performance for one) but it is more than made up for with the shock ending and Edward Woodward's terrific portrayal as the naive, God-fearing local policeman.

As for the remake, Id quite like to see it just to see what sort of a job Hollywood have made of it. Nic Cage doesn't look right in the role to me, though. He's too much of a method actor.

I'd be interested to see what they make of the pagan angle. So it's some sort of matriarchal society; I hope that doesn't mean using cliched ideas of witchcraft. I sometimes think the Americans' only understanding of pagan culture comes from the Salem witch trials, despite the fact that their indigenous population had a thriving pagan culture for thousanRAB of years before the ancestors of the current inhabitants settled there.

I missed that bit...ahem :o I thought it was the distributor who was pushing it for a lower rating.

I agree with what you say. The Wicker Man appeals to me less now it's been given a 12A rating and I know of many people who have said the same thing. I know that the cinema industry are not predicting a big box office return for this as they are expecting Adrift to make more money than Wicker Man.

I think this is similar to Lady In The Water - that was expected to be a 12A and ended up a PG, and that ended up sinking without trace around here.

I was planning to go see this movie at some point next week but I think I'll forget it now as I noticed it is a 12A, I only watch horrors if the are 15+ otherwise they wont be that scary.

I have never seen the original but I rented it earlier on today so I will be watching that tonight.... hope it lives up to the hype. :)

Oh dear. :D

The thing that Hollywood fails to understand about the Wicker Man and a remake is that the original was very much of its time. That is what makes it a classic, in its own way. I think "modernising" it was always going to be difficult.

can anyone confirm that the 12A in cinemas is cut to get that rating? Ive heard reports of scenes people have seen which havent made it onto our version.

According to the BBFC's website...

ALthough on a completely disconnected topic, I must admit I laughed at the following entry for Dirty Sanchez the Movie

So from this the only thing the two films have in common is the title, seems a bit of a swizz to me. I think I'll avoid it the same as I avoided WotW (and still have).

Hollywood just doesn't have the guts to remain true to the story, and kill off the hero at the end--especially in the manner in which he died, in the original. Nasty stuff--can't do that to a big star like Nic Cage.

I will go & see it.It's the only way i will be able to give a honest opinion on the movie.

I don't expect it to be near any good than the original but i'll still go & see it.

Haven't seen this movie yet, I'm a die hard fan of the original and after re-watching the original the other night I'd assured myself I wouldn't want watch this remake, but after hearing mixed reviews I'll give it a go. The remake does have a couple of actresses I particularly like in (Frances Conroy) being one of them
