The "why hasn't this ended yet" Thread

There's cartoons like Spongebob that continue to produce new episodes as a result of good ratings. So, regardless of whether people on the Internet claim to like it or not it doesn't matter cause kids still do.

However, there's also cartoons that continue dispite the fact that it's clearly no longer relevant, to kids anyway. So, what are some cartoons that have you asking, "why hasn't this ended yet?"

To me, at the moment, is Pokemon. I see that on Labor Day, Cartoon Network, is airing a marathon of what appears to be the new (or newer) episodes. Perhaps I'm wrong, but is this show relevant anymore? Atleast to kids anyway? Also, what kind of ratings is it getting? It'll be interesting to see if this is a Power Rangers situation where the ratings are decent, but kinda disappointing considering this was once a #1 show.

King Of The Hill.

I mean, it's still a pretty good show (especially compared to how bad The Simpsons had gotten at the same point into it's run), but has this show ever been a ratings success? It can't be cheap to produce, it continually gets pre-empted and shuffled around the schedule and poorly-advertised, and yet...there it is, eleven YEARS later.

Pokemon Diamond and Pearl sell like hot cakes. Diamond sold more units than any game in 2007, and all together, Diamond and Pearl have sold more than 15 million worldwide. And as long as the games stay popular and kids love to watch Ash catch new monsters in a new region, the anime will keep going "for generations to come".

The interview about will it keep going is here. So basically, the anime will keep going foooorever, and ever and ever and ever.

And I have no clue why King of The Hill is still here. It's an ok show, but surprising that its lasted this long. It was even canceled, and then brought back by Fox!

Funny considering the third was one of it's best seasons.

I don't think any show needs to end, really. Every show no matter how bad has it's fans. I wouldn't want a show to be canceled just out of my selfishness.

I remember when it first debuted, that there were a lot of friends of mine that were huge Beavis and Butthead fans and they expected something similar to that.

I wonder if there were any other B&B fans tuning for the same reason

So what? That's like comparing the Super Mario game to the TV show. So, just cause people still play the games doesn't mean they still care about the cartoon. And I'm sure that's reflected in the ratings.

But Super Mario didn't have advertisement for a billion movies, more games, toys up the wazoo, etc. Pokemon has a far more potent and long-lasting merchendising plan than Super Mario Show.

Also considering everyone in the world has 3 DS's apparently, unless a widespread nuke goes off and EMP's every single one of them, Pokemon will never cancel.

The show does well on CN. On Saturday mornings, its usually one of the top rated shows for their Dynamite Action Squad block.

Its true that the ratings were much higher back in the day and have dropped over time. Still, it hasn't gotten to that point where CN would drop it. Pokemon still is popular worldwide, albeit not as much at the turn of the century.

As it was already mentioned, Pokemon still does quite well, in terms of ratings, on DAS. It's true that the ratings aren't as high as they used to be, but they're still good enough for Pokemon to stick around. Some people do only play the video games. I'm pretty sure that at least most of the kids in my high school classes playing FireRed, LeafGreen, Diamond and Pearl during free classes weren't really interested in the show.

Pokemon has a much more long lasting appeal than a Super Mario show could considering they are developing new generations of Pokemon for each new set of games. Besides that, the appeal of the show allows for kids to continue to enjoy it. Some kids drif away from it, while new ones come to watch it. As long as the Pokemon games sell well, and I'm sure that they will, the series will continue to promote those games.

But...Mario brought video games back from the brink of death and he revolutionized the way people play video games. He's also been around for almost 30 years and his games have been best sellers on every Nintendo console and hand-held that they've made.

Pokemon may be fantastically successful, but Mario is Nintendo. He's the man.

Even factoring in the stigma of the old cartoon, I still can't believe we don't have some sort of new Mario show by now.

You do have some good points about how Mario is a huge part of Nintendo. I thought that the old Mario cartoon was kind of bad and they haven't done a new Mario show because the more recent Mario games have been more about playing sports/event games than a story. I might have mixed that with something else though. The main set of video games for Pokemon always allowed for the story in the anime series to continue to be successful.

The insistence on continually making new Scooby Doo shows, movies, and DTVs.

I mean the series was never really that good in the first place, and it's always been ridiculously repetitive, but it just won't die.

I can understand why kids watched Scooby-Doo back in the 60's/70's when there was literally nothing else to watch, but with cable channels offering dozens upon dozens of better animated programs, I can't figure out why they're still shoving Scooby down our throats. Even as mindless nostalgia, it's unbelievably stale. The "self-aware" jokes about the gang knowing that the ghosts and monsters and such are just "Old Man Winters" or whatever were worthy of a smirk in stand-up comedy clubs in the late 80's, but honestly...the joke's over, people.

Awe I still watch itXD
Scooby and Shaggy will always remain my favorite to this day.
Lets talk Simpsons, whats up with that? Its getting worse and worse each season and the Fox people can't take a hint. Power Rangers? How is that doing? I got tired of it after the first season LOL And its still going. My Gym Partners a Monkey, is that ending any time soon? I know hardly any one likes the show LOL. What else, what else? I think these are all the shows I want to end after being a live for a bizillion years, what will happen? Only time will tell.

Edit;

I did forget Sponge Bob some how, it was in the first post LOL. The newer episodes just keep coming and their not as good as the first seasons, but your right they'll keep making good ratings. Every one loves the sponge.

Yeah, I can understand that. If they had continued to go with the way of Zombie Island, a good slightly dark toned story with the fact that the gang were dealing with actual monsters instead of people in costumes, then I think that having new Scooby Doo DTVs and series for so long wouldn't feel as weird.

It's not related to animation, but I'm wondering that exact question about American Idol and Survivor. If you're going to have Survivor live up to it's name, send them over to Iraq and that's real survival. As for American Idol, do we really need to hear more people make complete idiots of themselves on TV like Sanjaya or William Hung?
