The White Stripes

I don't think it's something to be measured. It's inexplicable. Different people will feel different music. It isn't something to be rated. It's not something to be broken down and analyzed. Why pick at a song for having an extremely simple, unchanging bassline for three minutes straight? It doesn't matter what each individual band meraber is doing. What matters is the sound that they formulate together. And you either feel that formulation, or you don't.

Who's to say that every Tolkien-influenced, fast song had no emotion put into it? Who's to say that every Gilmour-esque guitar solo wasn't written by an individual that sat in his or her room and practiced scales for years? It's impossible to tell, really. All you know is whether or not you feel the music. It'd be pretty arrogant to think otherwise.

I still rate them as the best gig I've ever been to. You'll have the time of your life. They're one of those rare banRAB that can crank up the volume all the way up and you still wont think it's too loud. I think it's the fact that it's just guitar and drums so there isn't much room for cacophony...
Not much interaction with the audience though...the only real objection I had. But who cares aye...;)

the new album is good. diverse, lots of git box solos, meg white drumming.... i hate that "bone broke" song though...it seems like one long intro. it seems like it should go into heavy rock beat mode, but it never does.

guys I just want to let you know I might have to take the next few days off. I think I'll be nursing this injury I got when Little cream soda melted my face off.

RT, Ill try to figure out the influence. I'll edit this post if I find out.

Good review by the way CT

I also prefer that album most of all.

I think the main reason it's more accessible to me is that I had gotten used to their sound by then, it was the album that made me a fan, prior I'd been lukewarm.

AH CMON GUYS! The White Stripes raaaaaaaaawk. theres been nothing like them ever. jack white is phenonimal on guitar. granted, meg white is slightly one dimensional (and a tad ugly) but their songs are great so who cares????!!!!

Well for someone with the name "dreamtheaterisgodly" the premise might be out of your reach. You can imagine the white stripes as a cultural backlash, as punk might have been to the prog-rock of the 70's. Everyone has so much extra going on, that the stripes went the opposite way and kept it as simple as possible without it being garbage.

Their second album is called De stjil (i may have spelt that wrong) after the dutch painters movement of using just three colors, shapes, paterns, whathaveyou, to create paintings. Tihs is basically the premise of the band, which has strayed slightly with Jack's solos but their minimalist style remains resolute.

Meg's drumming isn't supposed to be complex...at all. Its a beat, something you can occationally dance to, something to hold time, or just have a beat there, to make it more rock. Its thurab, I can't explain it, but there is no place for a Portnay solo in the white stripes, it wouldn't be right.

Complexity does not equal hype. Complexity is not always good music. Im trying to argue scientifically a subjective opinion, so its an impossible task, but I hope im pushing you toward where im trying to go. The stripes are primal, they are what rock is, think Kiss, think Ac/Dc. Think simple. Keep it simple stupid, keep it striped.
