The Virgin Suicides

Hi everyone! I just finished reading The Virgin Suicides, and I wanted to discuss it at Books. Someone was nice enough to redirect me here.

I glanced over the previous posts. Someone said that the 2nd person POV (we, us) detracted from the story. I'd have to disagree. Our narrator (or narrators!) are unreliable, which always adds a degree of mysteriousness to The Virgin Suicides. Very few authors attempt to write in such fashion, and it is obvious why. It's difficult! I haven't seen the movie yet, so I'm a bit curious as to how this translated onto the big screen.

My favorite character is Lux Lisbon. Out of all the girls, I sympathized with her the most.

I also agree with an earlier post: the best line belongs to Cecilia, who tells the doctor that he doesn't know what it's like to be a 13 year old girl.

Why do you think Cecilia committed suicide in the first place? Who is to blame? What do you think of Mrs. Lisbon?

I saw it again this week...

I know that it has a huge impact on my thinking... I just know that everything can happen...

I know the girls weren't happy, but I don't really understand why they let the boys come over whenever they killed themselves?
They wanted them to find the girls or what?

But I like that movie alot...

I don't know why JH left whenever they slept together, but I guess he just wanted to write her down his victory list and then leave...
What else does he do this for?

So many questions...

I didn't know there was a book though, but I am looking forward to finding it and reading it too...

This was the movie that made me admire Kisrten Dunst. She was great. But so was the rest of the cast. This movie had a great cast and all actors did fine jobs.

I absolutely love this movie. Sofia Coppola can do no wrong in my opinion.

The books also my favorite book.

I need to get my copy of the movie back, my sociology teacher borrowed it from me.

ITA. I really enjoyed the film but it missed something. I should have had screamed, and cry... but I didn't.
The actresses were indredibles ! Kristin Dust is fantastic !!

I went away from it feeling really low, just because of the brutal ways the girls died...morbidity anyone? I also saw it initally 'cause I'm a big, BIG fan of Hayden Christensen and A.J Cook, as well as all their cinematic efforts.

I also remember being scared of Josh Hartnett's hair...

I loved The Virgin Suicides. I think it's a wonderful movie and there's so many reason to love it.

1st - the complexity of the film, as mentioned before, no-one truly gets the point of the film, You just watch it and be entranced by the story, kinda like Donie Darko in that sense, and it's like you're just on that ride, seeing the world through the eyes of the young boys.

2nd- Sofia Coopla is an amazing diretor. I think she delevere the story in such a way that it's emotional, yet not selling the emotional points of the movie. I thought that was great and 3rd- The actors are fantastic. Alothough I'm not a fan of Josh, I still liked his character, especially the charming flirting at the start with Lux, that was hot. And a young Hayden :) And the relationships on the film, perfect.

I think this was the movie that turned me to the more indie like flim genre. I know that it's not, but the style... and this is the film that made my family believe that I do indeed, have a "problem" Parents are SO clueless sometimes... (one theme of the movie, i think, was the fact that parents don't understand kids)

I loved this movie. I saw a long time ago, in the theaters. My favorite character was Lux, although I liked Cecilia too.

I thought all the actors were good. This is the movie that made me Kirsten Dunst fan. I thought she was amazing. And Josh Hartnett was great too.

I didn't like it much either, I didn't feel much for any of the characters. I wouldn't mind reading the book though. Perhaps if I watched it again I'd like it, that often happens with me

I didn't like it when I first saw it like a year back. Maybe if I see it again with a more open mind I'll see what everyone else loves about it.

**shrug** I still don't get it....I guess I never will.

Thanks for trying to explain it, though.
:D

That's one of the reasons I loved it that much.
We never get to completely understand the reasons behind the suicides because we're seeing the story through the eyes of young boys that were fascinated by the sisters and who don't fully understand the suicides. And that's what makes it so hard for them to let go.
Maybe if they knew all about the girls and the suicides it would be easier for them to understand what happened. But they don't understand and that's why they keep going back to the events that led to the suicides.

hi...i saw 'the virgin suicides' in a theater when it was first released.....all i can remember after watching this film was how depressed i was...i left with a feeling of no hope.......the only other film that i can remember making me feel that way is 'your friends & neighbors'...i believe i saw that about the same time too....maybe it was just the time and the space i was in at that time...perhaps now's the time for another look at 'the virgin suicides'........

Personally, I think there was no real reason why. I mean you could specualte it was because of boredom, the fact they were never allowed out of the house, but the whole movie is about the neighborhood boys following the story of the suicides and trying to figure out why they did it, but they can never really fathom what really went through their heads and they can only watch from the outside.

I must be the weird one....I saw this movie, and I didn't understand it.

Why did the girls kill themselves?

I can't believe there isn't a topic in here for this wonderful movie! Is anyone else a die-hard fan like me? Anyway, I'd like to get a topic going on the movie, and talk about the major mysteries of the film. Who's everyone's favorite character and why? (Just for a starter question) PLEASE post me a private message if you truely are a huge fan like me, I'd like to give you the link to this awesome and unforgettable forum where fans like me have joined
