Cold-Blooded Piece of Toast

I felt the reason it *was* so compelling was that it was from a outside POV. I felt that it would have been lessened if it were told from a more personal POV. Become stereotypical teenage angst. I should know. 'Tis my life. *g*

I really liked this movie. Unlike others I wasn't put off by the actual suicides. The girls were otherworldly. That was what carried the movie. They didn't seem completely real.

I've read the book and found it fascinating. Most stories like that are told from a more personal POV and while some are compelling they don't *stick* with you like this one did. I even tried my own hand at it. Wrote a story based on a father's perspective of his daughter's suicide attempt. Eh. Turned out all right.

I totally agree. The soundtrack was brilliant. I love the song I'm not in love...when they are at the dance and Strange Magic. The song by Air was brilliant too. Kirsten and Josh had great chemistry.

The Virgin Suicides is a great movie, but I personally feel it could have been a lot heavier and grabbed more emotion than it did.

Now, part of this not happening falls on Eugenides' shoulders, because since he chose the 3rd person observing POV, you don't get the emotions of the people you'd REALLY like to see them from, which is to say the parents, specifically the dad, and perhaps a little more from the girls.

There should have been more background (both in the book and movie) about their treatment at the house, because it didn't seem quite so bad that they would all kill themselves. However, I suspend this opinion because I think it's possible that Eugenides goal was to have the Lisbon sisters seem almost ethereal, which I feel was definitely acheived.

Anyways. Yes. It's a good movie. Sorry for the essay, it's the film student in me.

I really loved this movie. It was real, emotional and I could relate to the characters in a way...

Nope, its purely fiction. (If it wasn't I think I'd be a little ah, weirded out)
Yeah.. in the film they were j ust out with other girls and having sex and what not. I prefer the way the book ended it, the quote was just perfect.

Cool. Here it is.

Keep in mind I wrote it like a year ago.

Oh, and feel free to review it. *hint hint*

I love this movie soo much. It's one of my absolute favorites. The best part I think is how the movie stuck so closely to the book, using some of the same dialogue even. Kirsten did an amazing job as the part of Lux and the chemistry between her and Josh Hartnett seemed quite real.
The soundtrack was the best though, all the songs were by Air, and they fit in SO well.

I think the only time the movie was better than the book was Wonder Boys. I mean, in that case, the movie seemed good but like the book would be so much quirkier...but it wasn't. Movie was better

Anyways, back on topic! I think the movie is really great and very sad. It does justice to the book most definitely but as always - I think those who loved the movie should read the book.

She had a great debut movie. I think it might be one of the best first works in the american cinema of the 90's.
I also loved her second film.

I'll look for the book...Is it a true story?

I think I didn't like the end because the boys were kind of....sleazy.

Do you know what I mean?

I really enjoyed this movie. I think it was a brilliantly crafted film. The cast were perfect.
I love the style, the music, the relationships between the girls, the relationship between Kirsten and Josh. I think it really brought across how trapped they all were from the outside world. When they finally got their night of freedom, I could almost feel how happy and free they were.

I love the art :D

I didn't really get that either. Was it cause the girls knew the boys were observing them and wanted them there? Does anyone have any theories?

And, you should definetely read the book. It's by Jeffrey Eugenides.

In my opinion, this is agreat movie! The acting and directing are brilliant. I liked that Sophia Coppola was very faithful to the book, taking much of the dialogue directly from the text. The movie is just beautiful. Ironically, I am listening to the soundtrack right now!

That being said, I can understand why some people do not like it. It is a dark movie, and difficult to understand. I had to watch it a few time to really capture the essence of the subject. But I recommend that everyone watch it just one.

I love The Virgin Suicides, used to be a bit obsessed with it.

The book was really amazing and the movie was good too, while watching it I sort of felt uneasy as well as fascinated. My favourite character in both the book and movie is Cecilia, not sure why, I just find her the most interesting. I even wrote a short fanfiction type thing based on her first suicide attempt.

If anyone's interested I could post it?
One of my favourite scenes in the movie is when, after Cecilia's death, one of the boys is daydreaming and sees her lying on the branch of the elm tree. It's a really beautiful and creepy scene.
And although I'm a bit sick of Kirsten Dunst, because she's in so many movies, I think she was perfect for the role of Lux Lisbon.

Very cool performance.

I like the third person view because it gave a more mysterious vibe. That's how the girls were percieved... and so we saw them like the world did.

Does anyone know where I can get TVS caps?

I really loved this movie and even bought the book too it. While it was hard to watch sometimes, it's a powerful movie that I don't mind seeing again and again.

I have to agree that after watching it I felt like this hopeless feeling for a couple of days. But Sofia Coppola did a wonderful job w/ this movie.

its quite a hard thing to take in. Because you watch these girls all through out the movie, growing together, finding more freedom and then they kill themselves. It is a shock.

I don't get this movie. Granted last time I watched it I was 11 and now I am 14, but I dont get it at all. I love Kirsten and....yes I've said it 2 times but threes a charm....I dont get it

i saw part of this movie on tv. the scene where they all kill themselves. .....really scared!
