The VGA adapter didn't come with my graphics card?

So I put some old one and when I put in the graphics card CD, it says that the graphics adapter was not found and when T click install drivers, it says that the graphics card isn't compatible, so I installed the drivers from Nvidia's website. Can this old VGA adapter hurt the framerate when I play games? Because I've been having problems with it.
