I started watching the film with low expectations. There are so many terrible horror films that get a cinema release (The Unborn, for example), let alone those that don't.
But it really surprised me. The film is so focussed on the bad stepmother angle that the rug really is pulled out from under you at the end. Plus if you look back through the film it does make sense, unlike the sixth sense which I always thought was over-praised.
so, ok, it's a remake but as modern remakes go it's up there with the likes of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Last House on the Left rather than recent dross like Quarantine (rec remake), The Fog or The Wicker Man.
