The "Twist"

I don't know how this'll take off, but let's try. I noticed something after a comment I heard on C4's recent Top 100 list. Everyone was so shocked about the 'twist' in the Star Wars Sequel and it got me thinking that these days, twists in movies are more common but at the same time movie discussions on the net and on TV are common too. Even if you avoid the 'twist' before seeing it you still expect it. I haven't seen The Village but know there's a twist so when I watch it I'll be watching out for it before it happens. Do you think this spoils a film or do you enjoy knowing about twists before you see them, were there any twists you totally didn't expect even after hearing about the movie? It's a wonder how twists or even endings for that matter stay so secretive these days what with Pirate (ARRGG) DVD's and Downloading etc. - I hope you all think the same as me and have something of your own to add.

Except when they feature Joaquin Phoenix, and some sort of Village. Then they are lame, and just confirm you've just wasted part of your short life.

;)

I feel sad about twists sometimes, and you know you can never watch anything with a twist the same way again once you know what it is. Like Saw for example.... you can never feel anything to the bloodied guy on the floor beween the men, who was such a strong presense for me when I first saw it.

When I first saw The Sixth Sense I new nothing about the twist and it made the film so much better. As mentioned by UKTJ, The Village was such a disappointment because I spent the whole film trying to work out the twist (which unfortunately I did). I prefer not to know there is a twist as I enjoy the film more. I knew nothing about Identity and The Butterfly Effect and I love both films because I was not waiting for any twists.

I love twists in films and they're the reason I've watched films like The Usual Suspects, Mulholland Drive, Donnie Darko, Memento, The Sixth Sense (and their ilk) more than once. Although it's true what you say, you don't watch it in the same way again, you do come at it from a different angle. I enjoyed watching the films mentioned just as much on the second viewing when I was looking for the 'clues' that I'd missed as I did when I first sat down to watch them.

I get what you're saying JustExhumed. You cant watch it 'innocently' again for the first time, but you can watch it differently with all these clues. So I guess you get to see it twice....
