Japan is a debated topic. The "truth" about why the US dropped the first, and then the second, atomic bomb on Japan is a debated topic. The Japanese perspective and the US perspective can differ on this. Why did the US drop the atomic bombs? Was this a reasonable decision?
 
Only a Japanese citizen would answer answer that no one knows why the Americans dropped the Atomic Bomb.

Everyone knew why then, and almost all real Americans know why today.

Shall we ask why the arrogant Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor murdering thousands of innocent men, women and children, with absolutely no provocation, and how many bombs were dropped that day?

The "truth" should come out.

It was reasonable to drop the bombs on Japan. By ending the war sooner rather than later, hundreds of thousands of lives were saved; far more than the relatively few Japanese who were killed. And, by the way, were warned well in advance that they would be bombed but failed to believe the flyers that were dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

The truth about this is not a debated topic.

The estimated casualties of an invasion of mainland Japan were about 1 million allied personnel, and given the choice - most people would not want to be one of them.

For this reason we firebombed Tokyo (with greater casualties than were killed at Hiroshima), and atom bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Because of the need to have a stable Japan to combat communist expansion in the far east, there was never a rigorous scourging program similar to the 'Denazification' in Germany. Large sections of the Japanese society were and are revisionists, who do not accept the national guilt. If justice had been done properly, there would have been mass trials and executions of most of the Japanese officer class.
