The Thing - ITV (11.10)

When the local video shop first stocked The Thing back in about 83 I used to rent it at least once a week for about 6 months. Complete classic if ever there was one. The special edition dvd is superb, I'd highly recommend it, has some brilliant extras and the commentary with Russel and Carpenter is hillarious :D

I was just about to mention that - worth buying the DVD for the commentary alone as it's one of the best. Carpenter and Russell are obviously on the booze and getting more and more inebriated as time goes by. Great stuff, VERY entertaining. :D

Will Tom Cruise be playing the part of the head Norwegian, with his Californian accent?

The dvd is fabulous - the commentary aside there are some superb extras. It is worth the price for the commentary alone tho :D

Well, got the confirmation e-mail, it's been posted today so should have it for next weekend. I haven't actually seen it in a while or seen all of it so it will be nice to see it in it's entireity, and the commentary should be fun too!

If you enjoy this commentary - get ahold of Big Trouble In Little China. The film's a classic - and so is the commentary. Carpenter and Russell together again, clearly old mates having fun. I'd pay to listen to them talk over a blank screen!

One of the best uses of music in a film ever - I think there's mention of it on the DVD extra documentary - about how he used the that music to give a sense of loneliness & isolation when you hear it distantly along the empty corridors.

Ennio Morricone's score for the film was used to great effect. Carpenter had previously written the music scores on some of his earlier movies and Morricone's music was very similar in style. It's always there, beating in the background and it never gets in the way of the dialogue or the action, unlike a lot of modern music scores which sometimes completely overwhelm the film and drown out the dialogue.

That's great news. I just hope they make a return to the good old special effects days and avoid CGI at all costs, there's nothing more un-scary than a silly cartoon CGI monster.

You can bet your bottom dollar the effects will be CGI unless they can coax Rob Bottin out of semi-retirement to recreate the fantastic creature FX he did for the original.

Well, my DVD popped through the letterbox this morning (4 days delivery from Play.com including weekend!). Looks like I can watch it now before the weekend, but might leave it until then anyway, so I can really enjoy it instead of squeezing it in before bed for work the next day!
