They also provide a superb commentary for Escape From New York, with Russell winding Carpenter up everytime Carpenter's ex-wife (Adrienne Barbeau) appears on screen They're obviously great pals
I presume that Cat People was the 1980s remake - a classic example of a remake being MUCH WORSE that the classic original! I agree with all above that The Thing is a great 'remake'.
I still have the Video taped from Late Night Late on TVS from the 80's somewhere!! It was on their choose a movie phone polls. Can't remember what the other film was but I voted for The Thing about 15 times.
Must get the DVD though.
Also think for the era the original is very good too.
Does anyone else remember a movie program from the early 1980's that was narrated by Leonard Nimoy.
I think it was on about 9.30 on Saturday mornings and it showed the scene and explained how they did the Chest opening and hand amputation sequence.
Don't think they would be allowed to do that sort of thing on CITV now.
This is one of my favourite horror movies. Some of the special effects are looking a little creaky these days but it still has the power to really shock you. In a pre-CGI world the effects are realistic in the sense that they are actually there on the set for the actors to react to. They're not just reacting to empty space and a blue screen. This is important. I'm seldom convinced that actors ever react in quite the right way to non-existent CGI effects.
I'll never forget the first time I saw the dog-thing's head split open. It scared the sh*t out of me. Carpenter also did a great job at ramping up the tension and paranoia. The blood test scene is one of cinema's most tense and nerve-wracking scenes because you know that one of the crew is the thing (except you don't know who it is) and you know that when it's discovered it's going to transform. And you've got several guys tied to a couch so they can't escape...
Kurt Russell wears possibly one of the ridiculously huge sombreros i have ever seen in my entire life in this movie, its almost the size of the cockpit in the helicopter he pilots.
I love The Thing, an absolutely fantastic movie, still brilliant to watch despite it being well over 20 years old.
I just hope they never try and do a remake or re-imagining of it with some really pish actors in it but knowing Hollywood, they will probably go ahead and do it anyway
Hehe Russell says something along those lines when Adrienne appears for the first time on the EFNY commentary. He says to Carpenter something like "I wonder why you married her?"
They also spend a good 10 minutes on The Thing commentary taking the piss out of that hat
