The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Seriously Ultimate Edition Blu Ray only

It was made on 16mm so don't expect the usual quality you get from 1080p.
However , it's all one disc with all the extras and it benefits slightly from the higher bitrates possible with the increased Bluray capacity.

I'm not a great fan of 16mm on Bluray but for

Which is how it looks on Bluray.
It was made on 16mm so there's only so much detail you can get from it.

If Bluray defeats the object then what would a cinema screen do ?

Hmm, for 6 quid with all those special features I reakon it is worth it. Will be the first BR disc I will have bought as well despite having had a BR player for nearly 4 years. Cheers for that OP I hadn't seen it until now :)

Unless you buy a Bluray of a quality film aswell you are likely to be disappointed if your sample is TCM.

16mm is not a patch on the regular 35mm film that most movies are shot on so I would get a regular movie too otherwise you may never buy Blu again

Bit pointless buying it on Blueray if it's just going to look grainy and bad is kind of what I meant. Surely the whole point of bluray is to enhance a film's quality?

Ahh I see.:)

Yes , the 16mm quality of TCM puts the disc off all possible lists as demo material for HD.

But there is a slightly better quality thanks to the higher bitrates so with all those extras and the film all on one disc for only

I'm sure i read a while back that 16mm is technically around the same level as HD is. It's apparantly a little more than 1080p so if your watching anything from 16mm on blu ray then that really is the maximum you can get out of the image. It's not like a 35mm print were 1080p is nowhere near the level of quality it can produce.

Regardless of the specs 16mm material is nowhere near as good for HD and is immediately noticeable .

Look on ITV4.
Watch The Professionals and The Sweeney (both 16mm) then watch Randall , The Champions or The Saint and spot the difference.

Super 16 is better but its still inferior enough for it to be banned from BBC HD

The point of bluray is to enhance a film's quality  You can never make something 'better' than it originally ever was...

People seem to be forgetting that a lot of it is down to the state of the source materials in the first place. You can't polish a turd, so to speak; film decomposes because that's what film does. Even as comparatively recently as the 70s no-one really cared much about the cosmetics of celluloid preservation, especially not producers handling films made out of spare change or tupenny hapenny TV action series.

Not sure about that.

Things like The Wizard of Oz (1939) Disneys Snow White (even earlier) , Star Trek TOS and the early Bond films will never have looked as pristine and spotless as the Blurays do today

Computer tinkering removes all the dirt , dust and other imperfections that used to be accepted on any film whether it was at the cinema or tv .

Some people complain it's too perfect and looks unnatural
In fact even the restored dvd's of some of the Disney films look too good and some images look like still photos rather than film footage.

So as long as the negative has been looked after it is possible to make them look "better".

But you are right that lots of low budget films made in the 70's and 80's will not have been looked after and may never be good enough for Bluray

I think we're all missing the point here that the TCM is an abysmal film. They could project it onto the moon using 1080 3-D, holographic, jiggery pokerey and it still wouldnt improve it, not one jot.
Gimme a GOOD fillum on VHS anyday, than a cr*p film with modern, remastered, scrubbed-up, bells-and-whistles. ta.

Fair enough if that's your opinion, but don't state it as if it's a fact.

As strange as it may seem to you, some people DO actually have a differing opinion to you and actually like TCM. Whether you like it or not, TCM was a massive influence on the horror genre and is rightly hailed as a classic.

I LOVE TCM, but the wife doesn't like it much !
Especially the scene where grampa is trying to hit Marilyn Burns on the head with the hammer !
I've also got Part 2 ("Gruesome Edition") on DVD, which is a bit mental ! :D

Well said. "Abysmal" my arse. The poster probably didn't like it because it didn't have any car chases or blonde teens with big norks. Or things exploding :p

"Grandpa was the best.... some say he could kill them with one lick!"

Nope I didn't like it cos it's RUBBISH!.
When I first saw it many years ago, my Brother walked into the room just as leatherface was chasing some screaming teen around in the middle of the road in circles whilst yielding a chainsaw above his head.
A passing truck driver sees whats going on and stops to help. He also becomes part of this ridiculous merry-go-round.
My Bro. summed the entire scene up in one sentence-"If YOU were driving along and you saw THIS happening, would you stop and get out ?"- Course you bloody wouldn't , nobody in their right mind would!
So bad it's FUNNY!:)

*Thats how I remember it anyway-I,m sure people will split hairs.
