Is he a man that made bad decisions and did the wrong things, ir is he a twisted sick, killer with ah heart of stone?

I will remain passive and I was also wondering, how did Peter die?
When I watched it when I was like 10 with my mum and (it was on TV) they said that Tom had killed Peter because when they were hugging, Tom squeezed to hard, and I don't know if this was true?
