I have been amazed at the number of people who had never seen this film before. So as it was on yesterday i was wondering if anyone watched it for the first time. And of so, what did they think of it??
 
I watched a big chunk out of the middle, without realising what it was at first. I have to say, I was enjoying it thoroughly. The whole happiness of it caught hold of me and sucked me in.
Sadly could not watch the end for one reason or another, will be taking a peek at it in the near future for more quick happiness highs :)

Whats the Sound Of Music actually about.

I have caught little bits now and then but never watched enough to know what its about.
 
It's based on a true story. Set in Austria at the beginning of WW2. Maria is a nun, but not doing too well at it, so she gets sent to be a governess to Captain Von Trapp, who has 7 children. He's really strict, so the kiRAB rebel against having governesses etc etc. Maria wins them round, then the captain, but first getting on the wrong side of his posh new wife to be. As it happens, Maria and the Captain fall in love and get married. All this time the Gestapo have been trying to infiltrate Austria, and the Captain is strongly pro-Austrian independence. The family end up singing at a competition just so they can escape the Gestapo into the night. They of course do escape, but not before a few tense moments, including hiding out at the Abbey. Hope I've summed this up OK!
 
My daRAB been to the place where the Von Trapps still live. :)

I watched it yesterday again. I have seen it a few times, took me a while to watch it all in one go (I hjave a tendency at falling asleep)

Its very good, but I got the full story seeing it on stage with my sister playing Louisa!

The songs are very good. ;)
 
Just to correct my own dodgy history - I think I was a few years ahead. I think it's before WW2, ie. when the Nazi party are gathering influence. The Anschluss features in the film, I seem to remember... very cloudy A level history memories here!

i love the film, especially the songs. when it first came out my mum went to see it 13 times coz she really fancied christopher plummer who plays the childrens dad!
 
I cannot believe people have never seen SOM before! I now have it on DVD so I can watch it whenever I want, I don't have to wait until christmas for it to be shown on TV.

Its so happy and nice, I love the way Maria wins the children around by just being their friend and showing them love and affection. I also really like the youngest child Gretl, she is so cute and says the sweetest things like when they are hiding from the Nazis in the abbey " Mother, would it help if we sang about our favourite things?" and "Are Father and Uncle Max going to push the car all the way to switzerland". I must say that the Captain was gorgeous wasn't he. He looked so good in uniform, what woman wouldn't go there and fall in love with such a hottie?

My only complaint is that Liesel looks quite alot older than the the children. She's meant to be sixteen going on seventeen but Im guessing she was more like 24 going on 25!
 
I watched it for the first time last night. To be quite honest I'd never been interested to watch it in the past. But last month I told my aunt I'd never seen it before and she was shocked so she bought it for me for christmas.

I have to say I thought it was brilliant. I'd heard most of the songs before but not properly and it's excellent. I'm a bit of a sucker for feelgood films so that's why I like it. And Julie Andrews is a legend! There was me thinking she'd never topped her performance as Mary Poppins.

Well I'm glad I've seen it now. It's the Bee's B*llocks!!
 
You should go when they have a sing-along-a-Sound Of Music screening. The audience dress up as nuns, Nazis, even hills (... which are alive) and sing along with all the songs.
 
Apparently the real Von Trapp children had different names to those in the film. Also in reality the eldest child was a boy not a girl. The real children also hated the way their father was potrayed as a very cold distant and strict man. In fact he was always very loving and affectionate. But he did use the whistle!

Its only in the past few years Ive come to really like this film, I wish I had taken more notice of it when I was younger. When I have kiRAB I'll make them watch it!
