The smallest smartphone: Nokia 5500d (a user review)

Anyone else had a problem selecting the silent profile with the hash key? Returned a handset as it refused to go silent when pressing and holding the hash key but the 2nd one also has this bug.

Loving the phone but Nokia have really screwed up with that useless pop port cover. It is terrible out of the box and is only going to get worse....a real annoyance.

After a full day of using 5500d I am really liking the ergonomic shape of this thing, its just fits in the hand very well, you got to grab one to understand what I mean?

the earpiece volume is absolutely great on this phone, I find it simply better than E61 which is my current at the moment, it also holds signal better than e61... I am testing it in a room where I work that is known to be a dead spot...

Music Player and the HS-26
The instant swap key can bring the music player on, so there is no need to set the music player to any of the shortcut key? the music player has settings for bass boost and even reverb? this can all be found in the ?Audio Settings? and there is even a balance setting on this one? the pop-port to 3.5mm stereo adapter is not bad at all, it?s a bit big but it got all the normal remote control for the music player including telephone call controls of course? the included headset is very good, quite a surprise for me, since most of the Nokia headsets are a bit terrible on music quality? I find it comfortable to use and it can be used for sports activity, it simply doesn?t move once you got it in place? the only thing is that it is a bit tricky to put it on, but not that too difficult? perhaps I am just so used with the Sony MDR-EX71 ear bud type? as mentioned above the microSD that came with the phone has about 11 tracks of techno music and are also great to use them as ringtones...

Here are some more photos taken with the 5500 in broad daylight and settings are in auto?

BTW, the previous photo on my MB is a bit blurred coz i forgot to remove the plastic that covers the lense, plus the light is also a bit dim... thats all for now...

You got to see this guys!!!

^ actually you are probably just not pressing it on the right spot... happens to me as well, try to hold it a little to the left right side...

Nope.....it is not happening, no matter where I press the hash key it just registers the hash but does not enter silent profile. Like I mentioned this has been the case on both the handsets I have used.

Another quick query. On the active today screen, under the icons I only have the calender entries and not the inbox and missed call fields. Am assuming this is because of the screen size or am I being dull and missing something obvious.

Just a heads up as well that the phone is for sale for ?149.99 from Argos in the UK. It is on Orange PAYG but has zero branding.

Hmmm, ^ hash key issue resolved. Apparently, lots of S60 Orange phones have this issue and its' because Orange reserve the hash key for switching between line 1 & 2. Why Orange would sell a PAYG specific handset with a useful function disabled to make way for a contract feature is a bit strange.

Still, am enjoying the phone and after the SE P910i it is nice to revert back to a nice small handset. Have not used the sport functions as yet but will have a play soon. Think I would have prefered the IMO sexy grey and yellow colour but afraid it had to be the black....think the phone is a real solid bit of kit for ?150.

same here, i believe is the screen, coz if you goto messaging the opinion is not there, not like the other S60 3rd ed...

anyway, i seldom use active standby i prefer the standard and just use shortcut keys for functions that i often use...

there is a bit of a lag when opening music and it is very noticeable when trying to change your ringtone in the profiles, other than that most are in the same speed as the E61 and most of the time the 5500 is even faster...

there is one thing that i find it really fast and i mean surprisingly fast and that is in bootup time... it is the fastest i have seen in an S60, it could be coz of the small screen...

battery life is just about 2 days in moderate to normal use, which is basically the same as the E61...

i paid about U$313 for it... i bought it here in abu dhabi (UAE) where i am ATM... cheers!

you guys simply got to see those russian clips on how they tested this phone!!!

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8100/4.2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/107)

The only issue I have had with this handset is that my C button is exceptionally hard to push compared to the other buttons.

strange, mine is very easy, its the (*) key that i am having a problem, its not hard to press it, but i keep on missing the right spot to hit it... i have also heard 1 report that the whole keypad peeled off from the case, just a heads up...

I have my 5500 for a week now and I like it. The keypad takes a little getting used too due to the heavier rubber touch but works good. The phone feels excellent in your hands.

I do get an error message from quite some apps at install. "Installation of - app - not supported" although they're supposed to be for Series60 V3.

I also get out of memory (close some apps) messages although the is only running the fixed Standby and Sport modes in the background.

Probably because this device has a non-standard screen. Most of the S60 3rd apps are looking for 240 x 320, or 320 x 240 screen. Even the 352 x 416 of N80 will be better supported than this screen.

Not sure why nokia did this. The should have stuch with the 240 x 320 standard and just made the screen E50 size.

^ S60 3rd ed can adapt to any screen resolution, so that is not the problem...

it has been said many times over here, in installing apps, make sure that the settings of your App Manager-Software Intallation is set to "All" and Online certif. check is set to "Off"...
