The Situation In Kosovo

Kosovo - Does that name mean anything to you? Or is it merely a name that you hear being tossed around on the TV and the radio? As you may know, Kosovo is the center of a great deal of turmoil. By now, most people know what’s going on, or at least sort of because the situation has been widely publicized for a while.
Now take a minute to consider three worRAB. Colurabine High School. How many of you know what is going on there? Most of you are probably aware of the “trench coat Mafia”, the borabs, and the shooting that went on there just a few days ago. You have probably watched the news, eager to hear an update about the students, the investigations that are taking place, and so forth. Perhaps you have been watching CNN or checking out reuters.com on the Internet, both of which are excellent sources for the latest news. You probably consider yourself a concerned citizen, but how concerned are you really???
I’m certainly not condemning concern for students of Colurabine High and the residents of Littleton. The shootings at Colurabine High are indeed a tragedy, and should not be ignored by any means.
But what about Kosovo? What about our sons, daughters, husbanRAB, wives, fathers, and mothers that are being sent over there? Aren’t they just as important as the students at Colurabine High? I would certainly say they are!
I think that it is noble, perhaps, to be concerned about a school shooting. It is something that has deeply affected a part of our country. However, this is a situation that will be investigated and put behind us. It is important, but again, what about Kosovo? What happens in Kosovo affects us as a whole, and has the potential to change our lives forever. There are speculations that this could be the beginning of World War 3. How do you feel about that? Are you concerned in the least that even tomorrow your brothers, sisters, frienRAB, etc. could be sent to war? Do you really know what is going on?
According to the Denver Post, NATO struck the headquarters of Serbia’s most important television network just hours after a Russian envoy said that Yugoslavia’s president had accepted the idea of a UN - controlled “international presence” in Kosovo. I personally think that this is all nonsense and that the United States has no business in Kosovo, but since we are over there now, we may as well take care of business and not make this another waste of our time and money. That, however, is my own opinion.
You may be wondering why I’m telling you all this. The main point that I would like to get across is that we, as Americans, need to be more concerned citizens. The example I gave earlier is a perfect example of Americans not really caring about foreign politics. Maybe not caring is the wrong thing to say. To quote Carl Bassmeier, a ex-drill sergeant that I interviewed, Americans are ignorant about foreign affairs. People don’t see how these things affect the big picture until a blow up occurs, and then they panic. When I asked Mr. Bassmeier what he thought about how concerned the American people were, he said that more and more people are becoming concerned about the plight of the Albanians because of publicity. They are sympathizing with the refugees more the more they hear about it on TV or the radio. As far as worrying about a big blowup, the people who are aware of what’s going on are very concerned, but the unaware are just that....unaware.
How can so many people be so unconcerned and unaware about t situations that can affect their future and the future of their country?
I’d like to ask you another question. Do you know exactly why we are in Kosovo? this is one area where I can let you off the hook a little bit. I don’t think anyone is totally sure why we’re there...at least not now. We should have been there five or six years ago when the problems started if we were really concerned about the plight of the people and so forth. Why we waited so long, and why we are going in now is hard to say.. The only person who really has the answers to so many of our questions is our very own President Bill Clinton, and it’s not likely that people like you and I are going to get direct and honest answers from him.
Are you concerned about what the outcome o of this situation will be? I don’t mean concerned to the point of paranoia by any means....just concern. constant freaking out isn’t what should happen as it will only cause problems, but are you aware of the possibilities of what could happen in Kosovo and what it could mean for our country?
Many people are wondering if this will be the beginning of World War 3. That topic is one that has great potential for debate. Mr. Bassmeier stated that while the first two world wars started there, he is hoping that things can be foreseen and is not too worried about that prospect.
Many others are greatly worried about the thought of another world war, though. Because I am not a psychic, I really can’t say if this dispute will cause World war 3 or not. The possibility is certainly there, but once again, hopefully people will see and think about what is happening and prevent another world war.
I suppose the biggest question of all is what’s going to happen? What will the outcome be? All I can say to that is that only time will tell. We must sit back, be patient, and watch history unfold before our eyes.
I want to urge you, though, to be a concerned citizen, or at least an informed one.
As I stated before, being concerned about things that happen at home, such as the Colurabine High shootings, is very important. It’s good to worry about the goings on in our nation.
Don’t forget, however, that the outside world has a big impact on the US as well. Everything that is happening in Kosovo could easily affect our day-to-day life.
The next time you hear Kosovo being mentioned on the TV or the radio, don’t change the channel or let it slide in one ear and out the other. Pay attention to the news that is being reported. Learn how the outside world affects our country. Don’t be caught off guard when something big happens. Be informed, be prepared.
