Why? Why are they using that awful packaging set-up again? The art work is nice, yes, but I hate how the discs are just crammed in there and get scratched when you take them out.

Regardless, thanks for the pics so that we can see beforehand, Moto Pete.
 
I think the packaging is a little better this time, at least there are indents that allow you to get the disc out easier.

A couple other things that I've noticed about the set are Hungry Hungry Homer does have the ending intact(I was worried about that since it's been cut out on TV since it's initial airing), and in the intro in the booklet Matt calls the episode Homer Vs. Dignity a "beloved episode." That last one I suspect is Matt messing with us.
 
There's no reason why "Hungry Hungry Homer" wouldn't have its ending intact, really - the deletion of the "For I am the mayor of Albuquerque!" scene is just a regular old syndication cut. The DVDs always use the full-length network broadcast masters.

And that's especially beneficial with this set, as Season 12 got quite gutted in syndication. Mike Scully has mentioned that he always tried to do shorter shows so that the syndicated versions would retain as much content as possible, but they hacked his seasons up anyway. Some of the more noteworthy offenders for this season include the ending to "A Tale of Two Springfields" ("Come on! Let's get 'em while they're dancing!"), the chloroform gags from "The Great Money Caper" ("Mountain Dew? Ohh!"), Wiggum and Jack Crowley chatting it up in the police cruiser from "Pokey Mom" ("SportsCenter's not bad." "Yeah, I never got that show..."), Smithers' "Maggie shot Mr. Burns again!" from "Day of the Jackanapes", the rhino egg from "Simpson Safari" ("What did you just see, Lisa?"), and Colonel Tex's "Oh, you are so full of it" run from "I'm Goin' to Praiseland". It'll be nice to see all this stuff again.
 
Working my way though the DVD so far (how I got it? Ask me). As you can see, packing still stinks, and so far, nothing much to really note so far. Commentary's so far are silmilar to last season. Lots of jokes, not a lot of juicy behind the scenes stories.

But, for those of you who don't have the DVD, here's a few notable things that's kinda interesting. According to the commentary to "Simpson Safari", Larry Doyle was the one who came up with the idea for the episode, and according to the commentary to "A Tale Of Two Springfields", John Frink and Don Payne came up with the town separate thing, and I think Larry Doyle came up with the area code plot point. So it's not really John Swartzwelder's fault those episodes stunk (also, the commentaries were recorded in February).

It wasn't the idea of the episode that sucked, it was the fact that the episode fell apart once they got to Africa and somehow kept going downhill.

I don't actually mind Tale Of... so much, though. It's just an average episode.
 
The area code situation actually happened in Oregon that year; I thought (as well as everyone else who lives here) that Groening personally inserted that plot into the episode to prove he still hadn't forgotten his roots.
 
I am so glad to finally have Trilogy of Error on DVD, but WHAT IS UP WITH THE PACKAGING!!! Did Fox not get the memo that we hated it on Season 11?
 
Well, you do have a point (and I can spot a lot of Swatzwelder gags), but just to remind you, the whole writing staff contribute and pretty much rewrite to a script after a script is written for the episode. So, for all we know, some of the gags in the final episode were not his.

But then again, Swatzwelder seems to be a person who cares more about gags then plot. And Mirkin did said once that Swatzwelder's scripts in his time were barley rewritten...

Fun Fact: The original title of the episode was going to be "Go Simpsons Go!", a reference to a movie I can't remember right now.
 
A couple interesting tidbits:
In the commentary for Worst Episode Ever Hank Azaria claims that people think the voice of Comic Book Guy is based off of Ralph Bakshi. Hank says it is not, that the voice is based off someone he knew in college.

A deleted scene from A Tale Of Two Springfields where Roger Daltrey says an expletive to Marge is also included and is pretty funny.
 
Y'know, I never understood why some thought CBG was a caricature of Ralph Bakshi. They don't really sound or look that similar. Glad Hank set the record straight on that. That was good, but my favorite deleted scene was Wiggum with the hummingbird in his mouth. So random.
