"The Simpsons" renewed for 23rd season

Didn't see this posted anywhere on the site, but "The Simpsons" has been renewed for a 23rd season, taking the total number of episodes to 515.

I find it kind of interesting how it's only a one-season renewal, I figured for Fox animated shows a two-season renewal would be normal, and with it being Fox's #4-rated scripted show (and may be in line for #3 with how House has fallen this season).

It's sad to see The Simpsons fall behind the competiton. :(
As long as The Simpsons will continue airing with new episodes, I'll be okay.

I figure, at the least, they want The Simpsons to reach the 500th episode milestone it so rightly deserves, which this renewal will give it. Only time (and ratings) will tell if they want the show to last past that.

Either that or season 26, which would bring it up to the 25th anniversary.

Unless that would be when a second movie/grand finale would come out...

Anyone else a little disappointed by this news, since, even though the show does come up with some good episodes every once in a while, it now feels as if the show is now on life support, with Fox not wanting to pull the plug?

If Fox is really that determined to keep the damn thing going, then how about getting rid of Al Jean as showrunner already? He's had control of the show for ten years now, how about getting some new blood to run it? It can't make the show too much worse than it already is now.

Wow, 23 seasons. They really will never stop The Simpsons...

I honestly don't feel anything. While I don't consider the last few years to be the absolute worst thing on television, I could only feel excited in the way I'm supposed to if they were to take the show in a better direction. Oh well. In any case, congratulations to this show and its fans.

I'm surprised that it keeps going. It's a ratings dud when compared to what it was in the 90's. In 1990, it was getting more than 10-11 million viewers on a regular basis. Nowadays, it's more like 5-6 million.

Animation Domination really needs something new. Three MacFarlane shows in a 2-hour block is just way, way too much, even if you like his stuff. Hopefully Bob's Burgers turns out decent.

I will say the raw variability of the quality of the show it's had lately is weird. They had some fun episodes leading out of the SD run of the series, and the start of the HD episodes was pretty solid as well. Then this season just led with a whole bunch of plain dull episodes. It's hard to get what they are really getting at in that sense.

That said, if it really does start to tail off, I could see the 25th season or 25th anniversary being solid places to wrap it up.

The most merchandised show in tv history will never be cancelled unless the merchandise stops selling. (It's only made 9 billion dollars worth). So, if you want the show to end, stop buying the crap with the Simpsons image on it

Yes! More Simpsons! But I hope the rest of the season is good, becuase form what I've seen only 2 of the 4 aired have been good for me (Loan-a Lisa and MoneyBART).

Considering Family Guy's ratings are usually higher than The Simpsons now, and since The Simpsons' ratings are lower than ever, I'd say it's Family Guy that's now the anchor, not Simpsons.

That really does make more sense these days. In the year 2000, The Simpsons may have been the anchor. But I'd have to agree that it's Family Guy that's anchoring Fox's animation domination in 2010.

I mean think of it this way: Are people tuning in for The Simpsons and then sticking around for Family Guy? No, they're turning on Fox while The Simpsons happens to be on while they're waiting for Family Guy to come on.

I'm kind of sad about this, me being once a fan of the show sad? Yes, cuz they've used up all there ideas already, what else can they do? Add more Lisa episodes? Yes, please lets add in more Lisa episodes.

I agree with others saying Simpsons will probably end with the 25th season. That's why its only getting a one-season renewal for the moment.

The VA's are being paid far too much now and they're all expressed interest that they'd like to retire from this series, and I don't blame them.

Simpsons likely won't last past 25 years, after that though I do expect them to make another movie.

That can't be right, because The Cleveland Show gets lower ratings than The Simpsons. People are tuning in for The Simpsons, tuning out for The Cleveland Show, then more are tuning in for Family Guy. They aren't waiting an entire hour just to see Family Guy.

I've said it a couple times - people paint The Simpsons as getting poor ratings nowadays, but they're actually still pretty damn good. Numbers from 15-20 years ago aren't comparable with numbers today at all - if you did that, every single show on TV right now would look like it was doing terrible.

The Simpsons and Family Guy are kind of the twin anchors - The Simpsons gives The Cleveland Show a pretty good lead-in and Family Guy gives American Dad a good lead-in. The Cleveland Show and American Dad would probably be dead without The Simpsons and Family Guy to help them out.

What a surprise.

Anyone could see such an obvious renewal coming a hundred miles away. Until the ratings really start to bomb (like, numbers worse than cable or something), or until the merch sales dry up (whichever comes first, I guess), this show is here to stay for the foreseeable future.

Uh.... woo?

Yeah I stopped caring a while ago, but I guess I should just chime in my thoughts at the very least. 25 seasons seems like a good way to go though.

Anything to back up that claim there? The only VA I've heard that expresses any disdain towards the show is Harry Shearer, but he's been like that for years, and even then I don't think he necessarily wants to quit the show. I have never heard of any of the others say that they would like to quit voicing their characters in the near future.
