The Simpsons - "Once Upon A Time in Springfield" - Talkback [1/10]

Wow, this was great. Very funny, and very touching. I can't believe the show's writers had the guts to let Krusty stay married (for now). That was unexpected and just...cool. That kind of stuff is one reason why The Simpsons owns Family Guy.

It was neat, and kinda sad, to hear Eartha Kitt's wonderful voice one last time. And Jackie Mason was back as Krusty's dad, that was awesome.

I cracked up when Bart and Millhouse reacted with disgust and horror at the Princess-ing of Krusty's show, yet for some reason they couldn't stop watching. And I loved it when Lisa freaked out at the "unicorn", and when Bart pointed out that it was just a horse with a fake horn, she hissed at him "Let me have this!!!!" :D:D

Really great one-liners: Bart: "Girls ruin everything!" Homer: "Oh, Bart, you say that now, but when you're an adult, you'll just think it." And the blackboard gag was funny too: "The world may end in 2012, but this show won't."

Loved this episode. Two thumbs WAY up!
 
It was nice to see them acknowledge something authentically French.:p

I'm sure when this episode airs in France or Quebec, the local people will get a kick out of it.
 
Had it's moments and the highlight was the scenes drawn in Paris were the best done since the switch to HD.

The ending...once in awhile,it's nice to have a sweet ending,and The Simpsons' writers are good at pulling it off...

All in all,I thought it was a good episode...
 
The ending was nice, I wonder if we'll ever see the princess again.

I liked the line where Homer tells Bart "you say that now, but later you'll only think it" and the pre-ejaculation joke came out nowhere because I wouldn't expect to see that on The Simpsons, still funny though.
 
This feels weird. It wasn't a chore to sit through. I wasn't mildly entertained by it. I actually liked it. I actually LIKED it!

Partially for the great commentary on how girl-centered concepts are dominating what used to be a boy-centric children's TV market, and partly because the funny wasn't MIA like usual. Lenny hitting the light switch as he left, turning off all of Springfield, then coming back and saying "Oh, whoops" was just one of many bright spots.

And the end scene in Paris -- wow! If only it had happened in a much earlier season, it would have been a classic.

Just to give you an idea of how big a backlog this series has built, Eartha Kitt died in 2008.


A joke that takes you by surprise, especially on The Simpsons these days, isn't a "screw you" joke; it's a GOOD joke. The show used to be full of these. There was a bumper crop tonight for some reason.
 
I thought the episode was so-so. We've seen variations of both the sub- and the main plot before, but this rendition was okay nonetheless. At first, I was afraid Princess Penelope upstaging Krusty was going to lead into yet another "Bart-helps-Krusty-back-on-his-feet"-episode, so the twist there was very welcome. I was pleasently surprised that Penelope's afffection for Krusty was genuine, too. I fully expected her to be revealed as a gold digger by Bart and Milhouse.

The ending was sweet, but it also left me somewhat confused. Is Krusty gone from Springfield now? Will Penelope return? I don't get it. :sweat: Maybe I'm overthinking the whole thing, but I'm still used to everything going back to the status quo at the end of an episode. When that doesn't happen, it just raises a bunch of unneccessary questions.
 
Fine good episode it had me laughing all the way through. As soon as penolope had that accent I thought for sure there would be something off about her but she was geunine. I think she will be back they kept Patty's baby and Selma's Sexual prefrences I don't see why she can't pop up from time to time just standing there like snakes girlfriend.

Althoug was that her really singing?
 
Good episode that had a great ending. I really wasn't expecting that Krusty and Penelope would get back together in the end, so that's a welcome divert from the status quo. Honestly, we probably won't see Penelope with any sort of regularity, but it's good to know their marriage will be suitably stable.

I was also a little perplexed by Bart and Milhouse still sitting down to the reformatted Krusty show even though they couldn't bare to watch it. Probably don't want to admit they actually like the show after all. :p
 
Well Penelope role could become similar to that red haired girl in Lisa's class that appeared in tonight's episode, after playing a major role in one episode become an extra. Though her role can also be similar to Apu's wife.

Am I the only one who thought that Krusty's daughter should have been in the background for the wedding? Maybe they are mad that Drew went over to the dark side aka Family Guy. LOL
 
Eartha Kitt's appearance immediately made this one a winner. Heck, I wasn't sure if that was her, but then I remembered that she was penned for an appearance in The Simpsons sometime around the season.

The ending was okay, but I feel like they tried too hard to make it funny (a horse holded on by string, making it look like it's flying? Can a dramatic moment go without shoehorning a gag?).
 
One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet: it appears that the people behind the Simpsons changed the ending again when it came to the "on air" version and the "advance copy to critics" version.

Basically, at the end of the episode (when the text appears mentioning the 20 years that the Simpsons have been on), the text in the "critics" copy said "Thanks for 20 wonderful years. Now stay tuned for three Seth MacFarlane shows."
 
They probably put the joke in during production many months ago, before they knew about the 20th anniversary special. Then they changed it when they realized that there would not, in fact, be three Seth MacFarlane shows airing after it.
