A classic episode airs tonight at 8 PM Eastern. I know that a new episode isn't airing tonight, but its not everyday that a classic Simpsons episode airs in primetime. This is done as a tribute to Elizabeth Taylor. Plus, since rabroad wasn't around in the early 90's, I thought this would be fun to see people's reactions to the episode(for longtime fans and for those who haven't seen the episode before). The last time a classic Simpsons episode aired in primetime was two years ago, when Michael Jackson died. Here is the synopsis:
 
Classic episode, though for some reason I don't love it as much as "I Married Marge" and "And Maggie Makes Three". Still, it's got quite a few funny moments:

Marge: There's going to be twice as much love in this house as there is now!
Homer: We're going to start doing it in the morning?

Homer: BOY, you get in the corner and... (Bart's already in the corner) yeah.

Bart: Da- da... D'omer.

Pig fat plant worker: Pew. Do you smell something? (Homer is in the background)

Krusty: You people are pigs! (cries) I, personally, am going to spit in every fiftieth burger!
Homer: I like those odds.

The gymnast screaming when he lands.
 
Wow, interesting. At first I thought "Great, another episode with a title close to that of a classic episode", thank goodness that's not the case.

This is one of my favorites from season four too. So many great gags, and even though it's status as a meme is cemented, I still love Bart's "Can't sleep, clown'll eat me".

And I agree with Speedy, even though this is a great episode, I think "And Maggie Makes Three" is a more touching episode.
 
Ooh! I adore this episode and consider it my personal favorite out of the three Simpsons kids' origin. Largely because I like Bart's jealously and eventual love for his sister (I've always enjoyed their sibling bonding as much as their rivalry). It's real, it's heartfelt, it's got its funny moments, and is an all-around wonderful episode.

Oh, and it gave us one of the best immortal lines ever, "Can't sleep, clown will eat me."
 
its great to see that a classic simpsons episode is airing on prime time. i'll be sure to tune in. like most classic simpsons episodes, "lisa's first word" was a great one.
 
Mmm. That ending gets me every time.

Best episode ever? I'd never relent in insisting that's it's at the very least in the top 5, but probably top 3, really.
 
Despite all the other funny material in the episode, the scene where Homer rests his beer can on Bart's head, and the subsequent shot of Bart with the can sitting there on his head, never fails to crack me up. It's so wrong, yet so funny.
 
It was really a treat to get to watch a Simpsons episode on a Sunday night and actually enjoy the episode. You really can't top a classic Simpsons episode.
 
Any reason why Fox stopped showing reruns of episodes from the 1990's? Whenever rerun airs on a weekday on my channel it's usually a episode from the late 2000's, like 2006 and up. And I saw all the episodes countless times. Why are the 90's episodes so rare now?:sad:
 
On lack of classic reruns on Sundays: My guess is that once an episode enters the syndication package, Fox prefers to take that episode out of the network rerun rotation (save for special occasions).

On lack of classic episodes on syndication: I'd personally blame that on local station owners who feel that viewers would prefer the newer episodes than the way better older ones.
 
Because people would REALLY see the decline of quality between those early-90's episodes and crap the show has devolved into over the last decade+. :crying:
 
That was a treat. I remember when it first came on. Actually, I only remember the audio because it was a family gathering and they'd locked me out of the room.

My local station has been good at keeping to the classics. Sorry to hear it's different for the rest of you. I think I read somewhere local stations have control over what Simpsons episodes they air now, not whoever they pay to syndicate it from. So....if you have a problem, tell 'em.
 
It depends on the market you are in, some markets are able to pick and choose what episodes they air(I believe this is more common with actual Fox owned and operated stations), whereas some markets are only able to purchase certain packages for airing. Instead of completely re-writing what I wrote on NoHomers recently, I'll just be lazy and link to it.

However, I think you might be a special exception. Portland is well known as Matt Groening's hometown, and I do remember watching The Simpsons on KPDX(it was a UPN station at the time) on one of my many trips to Portland several years back, and in the bump that preceded the episode(a first season one; I think it was "Life on the Fast Lane") they even pointed this out.
 
I think that might explain why my Fox affiliate stop airing the Simpsons at one point and why I don't see a few special holiday episodes every now and then. I always was curious about that.
 
I'm a little surprised they showed this one instead of "Krusty Gets Kancelled", since that was has more of her in it - she just got one line in this one.
