I think that was the point of the gag, but I really didn't find it funny either.
Actually, I'm kind of glad they did that bit. I don't think they did it for gratuitous cheap laughs/shock value like one of the MacFarlane shows. I think they were trying to channel the older Simpsons, where they weren't afraid of showing a little gore (remember when Itchy & Scratchy was horribly violent?). It seems like some of the more recent episodes have become very tame, and seldomly try to push the envelope with the network censors. To me, this gag kind of hearkened back to those days.
One thing I'll say is that it's good to see Homer working at the power plant again. I seriously hope that the era of Homer finding ridiculously random jobs every other episode is behind us.
