The Simpsons - "Bart Gets A Z" - Talkback [10/4]

This just reminds me of that Robot Chicken episode where characters from That 70's Show are now in a show called That 00's Show where they make fun of pointless daily activities and Topher Grace (Eric Foreman) steps out of character and warns us that the pointless fads we participate today (blogging, ipods, sending stupid photos via cell phone, texting, etc) will just make us all look like fools in the future.

It didnt seem odd at all that characters playing with 8 tracks, cassettes and records are now playing with mp3s. But does point out that such things will soon become outdated and pointless.

It doesn't really work the same way there, because That '70s Show was made 20 years after the decade. Even Happy Days went thru the same thing because it was a show done after the period, but about the period. When it's a show done about the period, but not during, it usually works better because it's a "looking back" thing. When you watch a show that's "era-specific", you're looking on a show from a particular time, where the jokes fit for that time, but you could really never see the characters being that well updated without it just seeming weird. With a reunion, it's fine, because you want to see the characters interacting with how much has changed, but the awkwardness is what's supposed to make it funny.

That's not what happened here....it was just awkward, but not in a funny way, just sort of a really uncomfortable way. It really gives you the perspective of how much this show has honestly stayed past its welcome.

I kind of get what he means, he just feels weird for a show we see that wasn't too techno-dependent back then just now wants to start jumping ship. I understand easing into cell phones like using them for plot development but when your jokes focus around them it seems a tad uncomfortable. Like Skinner using a cell phone it's normal but when he's using bart's groan as a ringtone and then putting it in an oversized phone is kind of awkward. and with this recent episode revolving around something so "5 seconds ago" it just seems dated it's like your grandfather making alot of jokes about an ipod players while everybody's using a better version. It just isn't normal but it's no reason to fault them for it their just growing up.

I understand the feeling that it's weird to see Simpsons characters using cell phones and stuff. There's no way for the show to be a relevant social satire without doing things like that, but it really highlights the weirdness of the fact that the characters haven't aged in 20 years.
