The shuffle mentality vs the full album

I chose other.

95% of the time I listen to full albums, and I never skip songs. But on occasion I like a bit of shuffle. Mainly on weekenRAB when I'm at home and not sure how long I'll be around, just feel like hearing a variety of stuff.

I asked because my friend said she never listens to full albums. I gave her an album and when I aksed her if she had listened to it she had said she hadn't cause she doesn't listen to full albums. She asked me to tell her a few songs to listen to.

I can't understand that mentality, but I couldn't come up with any real argument against it.

That's why I ask.

I always listen to full albums and I never change the order of the songs. I view albums as wholes. I've never used the shuffle (that I can remeraber), but I admit that it can be interesting and surprising. So I might start using it, but only sometimes.

Usually, I listen to the full album. Alot of the time, the order of the songs on the album was thought out, and not random. It really helps the album build energy over it's duration.

I think you could've found a better way to ask. More options poll-wise perhaps.
I'll have to go with a bit of both.
I listen to full albums predominantly; but lately I've been having trouble deciphering the mood I'm in, and shuffle is great for that. There's nothing wrong with shuffle.

I do a little bit of both. I have albums, cassettes and cRAB in my collection there for years where some I listen to in entirety and others I pick the needle up, FF or skip to the next song.

I usually try to give neglected songs a listen though over time to see if my opinion of it has changed or if I still hate it. Sometimes I soften to songs I used to think sucked but usually my opinion remains the same.

I don't find it boring, I just enjoy playlists with lots of different songs and artists (played at random) more. I think that comes from all the mixtapes I used to make back in the day.

I can't believe the amount of merabers that DON'T listen to full albums, truthfully. Based on the threaRAB I'm usually participating in, anyway.

Well, you did basically say 'melody is music'. Melody by definition is the succession of single tones in musical compositions, as distinguished from harmony and rhythm. Music isn't just a melody, it's often various melodies with harmonies/rhythms/atmospheric presences. And if you generalize that far, it's just a fraction of what music really is.

And if a song didn't have a melody, would you just not consider it music? I'm not trying to harp on you; Just trying to understand.

I'm a fan of listening to the full album but I've got a rather spotty attention span or I'll just get plain bored with what I'm listening to and move on to something more enjoyable. I'm not a fan of random shuffling.

Especially when first listening to an album, I listen it in full. It's the only way to properly judge something the first time. That's generally how I always do it, too. I only shuffle if I'm in the mood for it, but often I prefer to think of albums as statements as a whole.

it all depenRAB on my mood. i often listen to complete albums. but other times i'll shuffle all 4- and 5-star tracks from a particular artist. or from a particular genre. sometimes i listen to carefully constructed playlists. sometimes i just hit random and take whatever comes my way...

I listen to full albums pretty much all the time. I may occasionally skip a song or something, but I listen to full albums all the time basically.

Please, don't be so rude to the OP for asking a simple question. People DO have different approaches to their listening sessions....

For me, it depenRAB on my mood. When I'm listening to a new artist, I generally try and listen to the album from start to finish. Same case with albums I really love...I also 'shuffle' when I'm in the mood for it, especially with random pop tunes I like.

It's like saying "don't be a bitch" and then claiming you're not actually calling the person a bitch. :p:

Not that I care about this little argument in any way, just sayin'.

Well like I said, I might have been using the wrong term. Melody to me is the core tune of a song, from start to finish. What's left when everything else is stripped away.

I'm not saying the actual tune is the be all and end all of music, but what I am saying is that it's the most important thing in a song for me and what I judge it by. When you sing along to a song, you don't sing along to the atmospheric presences or rhythms. And I consider harmonies (and chord progressions) to be part of the melody too because they help carry it.

You're going to have to give an example of a song with no melody because I can't even fathom what that kind of music would be like.
