The Shining 2 Disc DVD release...

on September 5th. Will contain new documentaries and footage from the Kubrick's vault with the family's blessing.Although there will be no deleted scenes as Stanley never wanted them released.
So....anyone know what else could be on the dvd? Both versions of the film maybe ;)

Oh yeh Warner Bros are releasing a bunch of 2 disc special editions of Stanley Kubrick's movies.
 
Could it be the footage Kubrick's daughter shot:
Her interviewing Jack Nicholson while he brushes his teeth.
Kubrick yelling at Shelley Duvall.

I saw the above on a vhs tape years ago.

Also, perhaps some of the "making of" footage used in "Stanley Kubrick: A Life In Pictures."
 
well it was always said that 4:3 was Stanley's preffered ratio......that doesnt mean to say it WASNT filmed in widescreen....
That footage you talk about is on the current dvd edition but Vivien Kubrick says thats 30 minutes out of over 35 hours of footage she filmed so maybe there will be a lot more
 
I wonder if they'll put the bunnies parody on it as an Easter Egg like they did for Titanic

Fab news about the DVD, hope it has some good documentaries with Kubrick.

Watched this on BBC2 on Sat, and I was disappointed by the graininess of the print and the fact that it was still being shown in 4:3 open matte. Open Matte = bad framing, with lots of slack space at the top and bottom of the frame.

The recently released remastered DVD edition is also a 4:3 open matte transfer, which seems a strange decision given that it was filmed with a 1.66:1 ratio in mind, much like A Clockwork Orange. A Clockwork Orange is now shown on TV in its original theatrical ratio of 1.66:1 and is the same on DVD, so why not The Shining?

I can understand why Kubrick preferred an open matte transfer (where applicable) to cropped versions of his films, but surely this is redundant in the days of widescreen TV? If you have a TV with an incremental zoom option you can watch the film in the proper theatrical ratio, but it's hardly ideal. Who knows, maybe the HD-DVD version will be 1.66:1?
 
September 5th? Has this DVD actually come out? I do know that Sky Movies shows the US version of the Shining which is 20 minutes longer than the International version whenever it shows the movie. Only ever time that version has been seen on TV was once on Thames TV around 1988 to my knowledge. It certainly explains a few things in more detail. When I got the box set of Kubricks Discs two years ago the Shining Documentary was on it, but I was suprised that the Press Conference by Arthur C Clarke on "2001" back in 1968 was not on the 2001 disc, although it is on the US one. If this 2 disc per movie set ever comes about, I wonder if it will make an apperance.

I thought I had found it on the Amazon.com web site where there are two versions, but they are both one disc editions in 4:3 format.

I can't find very much info at all on release dates, but I did find the following interview with Warner Home Video in which it is stated that the forthcoming versions of The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut will be 1.77:1!

I'm not sure the BBC broadcast version would have accomodated an AR as wide as 16:9 but the print was more than likely overscanned during the telecine transfer so hopefully the new 16:9 version will be perfect (Full Metal Jacket on HD-DVD is 16:9 ratio.)
 
5th september? it is now 28th and there is still no 2 disc special edition, so whats all this about?, damn you got me all excited for a second then. :(
