I absolutely love this film.Just found they were showing it on More 4 and I couldn't resist tuning in and watching. The characters and writing is fantastic and it's a brilliant film all round
 
I agree. This is one film I can watch again and again and never tire of it. It's such a feel good film too, with some fine acting.
 
Well, he was still in prison in The Green Mile. Is that all he does nowadays, plays prisoners in adaptations of Stephen King stories?
 
A bit of trivia for those that didnt know,
The guy that played Captain Hadley (the tall warden that nearly throws Andy off the roof) in Shawshank also provides the voice for MR Krabs in Spongebob squarepants.

Yes - very good adaptation. Except in the book Red is a red-haired Irishman - I don't think Morgan Freeman would be a very good red-haired Irishman. And in the book there are lots of different warders and Governers, rather than just the same ones all the way through.
 
I think one reason the film works so well is that unlike most Stephen King adaptations, they are trying to build on the story he created rather than condense it, which is the case with most films based on his works.

They use the bare bones of the story, along with some snippets of the dialogue used, and create something very special from what was a good but unremarkable short story (or novella, if your prefer).

Just a couple of questions if anyone knows the answers?!

When Andy digs the tunnel from his cell, does he dig through the back wall? Must have been a very thick wall??

He must have removed a hell of a lot stone from that wall, which he took out to the yard to dispose of - yet he could only take a small amount out at a time?!

And when he tells Red about the box under the rock by the tree, did he go back there when he escaped to leave the money and note, as he obviously couldn't have written it before he went into prison?? :confused:

We see him come out where the pipes were, so he didn't go right to the back, just far enough to reach the sewer pipes so he could get into them and escape.

Yes, but then again, he was in prison for many, many years, plenty of time to dig and plenty of time to dispose of the evidence.

Yes, he did. Makes you wonder though, if he hadn't of escaped and was transferred or put into solitary, or killed for it, would Red still have went and what would he have thought if nothing was there? Mr Dufresne if you please!

Still not sure about point 1 - how did he know where he was tunnelling to? :D

Good point about the box, wonder where he got that stone from that he said would be there to mark the box :confused:

Anyway -- great film :D
