The Shawshank Redemption

Hi

i watched The Shawshank Redemption last night and i usually watch teeny bopper and rom/coms ( OR PERHAPS IM JUST GROWING UP! ) but i have to say this has got to be one of the best films i have ver seen, i was gripped from start to finish! anyone else think it was good too,

Stand by me, Misery, Carrie, The Shining and Dolores Claiborne all piss all over The Mist in terms of quality, there's probably even a couple of others I would rate above The Mist.

I would probably also rate these five over The Green Mile, if ever a film was overrated it's this one, just my opinion, i'm sure others will differ.

I wouldn't call Shawshank the best adaptation but it's certainly up there with the best.

OK ! so, something tells me you didn't like it, am I right.

I have loved this film for years, had in on video and now on DVD. Brilliantly acted and a wonderful story.
One of the top 5 films of all time.

I don't think The Mist was as good as Shawshank or The Green Mile, but at least it was true to the intentions of the author, which with all due respect to The Shining (which is nonetheless a good film) wasn't the case with Stanley.

Also, how many directors wouldn't have changed the ending of The Mist to make it more upbeat? Very few!

Derabont has a real feel for King books, and I'd love to see what he could do with one of the epic King books, The Stand and It.

Yep me too

I think my favourite scene must be where he locks the door and plays the music to the whole jail - don't know where to find it though - SUBLIME

One of the very few films that is BETTER than the original book !

I first saw Shawshank 15 years ago and it has remained in my top 5 of favorite movies ever since.....love it love it to bits. It would have won an oscar had it not been for Forest Gump, I guess with the gulf war going on at the time yanks got all patriotic hence their choice.

Regardless of the changes made by Kubrick for the film version the film itself is still a million miles better than The Mist. I've been through this before on here so can't really want to get into it to much again but the Mist's ending is one of it's weak points, on first veiwing it's ok but it offers nothing on repeat viewings, it's a shock ending for the sake of it rather than benefit of the film in my eyes, the film simply isn't good enough to carry off an ending like that and make repeat viewings worthwhile. The ambiguous book ending is a million times better and would have been a great way to end the film, regardless of what Mr King says himself.

Each to their own though :)

I would certainly give Darabont the chance to make IT, I would be curious to see how he would handle it. I loved it as a child, bloody scared the pants off me but I watched it again recently and don't think it holRAB up all that well, it still has some great bits and the children's section of the movie is still pretty good but the adults section just doesn't hold up for me any longer, not sure that section was ever much good.

By the way if we had to rank them I would go something like this, not sure where to go after these six.

1) Misery
2) Stand By me
3) Shawshank
4) Carrie
5) Dolores Claiborne
6) The Shining

Rob Reiner has handled King's books the best in my eyes.

Yes, absolutely love it. I can watch it over and over again. What is strange is that it wasn't that well received by critics and the public when it was first released but has grown in popularity over the years.

Amazingly that it was beaten at the Oscars by Gump.

Not that amazing - one starred the world's favourite retard playing a retard - Tom Hanks - one starred the movie world's favourite fall-guy, Tim Robbins, playing an intelligent character. Guess who the movie world was going to go for?

I like it but don't regard it as the best ever. Not even close.

Just looking at prison based movies alone Papillon and Sleepers are miles ahead
