The Secret Millionaire

I think the traffic on this thread kinda says it all really.
3 years and it's not reached page 10 yet, nobody's watching.

I'm coming to the conclusion that people want fluff and escapism or want to see fights and ill feeling on TV.
I'm in two minRAB as to whether the show should go back to the old format where they let the millionaire wander around and just find people to help as opposed to charity's.

Anyway back to tonight's show, I'll have to echo the thoughts of others, that was seriously emotional.
Not sure if that makes it a good example of Secret Millionaire of not though.

Oh yeah good point. I wonder, don't these people question why a camera crew is following this "normal average person" around and asking probing questions.

That was my interpretation too. He was concerned that if he gave her money it would be spent with good intentions, but not effectively. The same goes for the community wardens project - he couldn't get a handle on what all the funding was going on, so held back.

But he went back and helped both of those projects out in terms of their management, which is effective, and I'm sure he'd be willing to give more money if he felt it was justified.

I'm also fed up with the last section being the same all of the time. It would be better if the millionaire could simply reveal that they are very well off, or something a bit less naff. It's clearly something they are all told to do, so the blame for that bit lies firmly with the producers.

My mum raves about this programme. I've only seen one other set in Harehills in LeeRAB which was quite good but like some others on here I found it a bit dubious. Rich person goes round making themselves feel better by giving to charidee. I only watched last nights because it was at Aberfan and I'm always interested to see how this village is getting on after the tragedy. They've got a lovely community spirit and I think that the Scottish hairdresser woman (I've forgotten her name:o) really wanted to help BUT I'm almost certain that some of the people MUST have been suspicious - expensive hair, pearly teeth, good clothes etc. She just looked rich. However she did give good amounts of money and I cried like a baby :o:D I will tune in again next week.

Hilary seems to be really caring and interested in the individuals too, and I can see this being very emotional...lovely woman with a big soppy heart!

I really hope that woman went back to that huge house she wasn't happy in and put it on the market. All that money didn't stop her only child ruining his health and mental well being. Sad to see she was living so far from real connections with other people. Even if I had her millions I wouldn't isolate myself in an enormous mansion. It was huge!

I wish they would vary the ending from them getting dressed up in their best togs and telling the recipients that they’ve been telling a few little porkie pies.

I’m rewatching my recording and Gavin’s company is worth over 20 million. That doesn’t mean Gavin is worth 20 million.

Best edition ever! And I say that as a dyed-in-the-wool cynic.

Of course it doesn't have the same spontaneity any more - producers have clearly earmarked the 'good causes' in advance, but Gary was certainly a very human sort.

I usually end an episode of this having been moderately captivated and left with a half decent feeling of warmth, but this was a very cathartic experience for Gary. Pretty much all of the millionaires undertake this show, if truth be told, to indulge their egos and make themselves look good. Gary may have had the same initial motivation, but he clearly seemed to have gained some lasting benefit from the show that goes well beyond the (possibly intended) PR stunt.

Good stuff all round.

Shame about Blackpool though. I have so many happy memories of the place - now it looks like Baghdad after a suicide bomb!:(
