There aren't many other occasions, except perhaps those involving the Dalek-bothering Timelord from Gallifrey, where a changing of the guard causes so much interest and speculation. And while the release date is still some 14 months off, Eon Productions need to find the man who would be Bond, pronto.

But 007's tux is not re-tailored on a whim, and with franchise concerns to the fore, all manner of candidates seem to have some sort of chance at the role. So here, for your eyes only, are the MI6 files detailing those agents in consideration

All sorts of rumours are flying about.

One of the more popular ones doing the rounRAB at the moment is that Henry Cavill is playing the young James Bond in flashback only with Pierce Brosnan back in the role of James Bond taking on Le Chiffre as played by....Daniel Craig.

Incredulous. It's the indecisiveness and the failing to unanimously agree that's keeping Sony and Eon from making a publicly viable decision.

If I were to guess... I'd say Brosnan will be back for one more. I sure hope so. Perhaps with Bruce Forsyth as the villain... "Nice to kill you, to kill you... nice". Be great. They could have him stroking a cuddly toy.

That list might be a bit out of date:

Clive Owen is allegedly out over an argument with the producers over contract points.

Goran Visnjic is missing from the list as he also screen tested, and is allegedly Martin Campbell's favourite.

There were a couple of "unknowns" tested too, but 2 names have popped up recently. British actor Steven Brand, and a young Australian actor called Sam Worthington.

So... basically, it could very easily be anyone. From the list above, I don't mind any of them that much... Not totally sold on McMahon. He's a bit too smooth even for Bond. ;) Don't really know James Purefoy either. Goran Visnjic would be an interesting choice, if he can pull off the accent.

I think it should be the guy from Nip Tuck, he would definitely make a cool slimy bond. I can't believe they're considering Daniel Craig, isn't Bond meant to be good looking?

Colin Salmon is apparently also up for the role according to an interview with him on Radio 1 this evening. Looks like bookies fav is still Daniel Craig at the moment.

From the horses mouth: (From MI6.co.uk)

The French James Bond Club scored a brief interview with director Martin Campbell this week, and the New Zealander spilled the beans on the 007 casting status.

Campbell said that the race to become the sixth James Bond was now between Goran Visnjic, Henry Cavill, Daniel Craig and Sam Worthington.

And if that list doesn't chill the blood of any true Bond fan, I don't know what would.

The truth is, they don't NEED a new Bond. They had a good one, with a proven box office track record and who was keen to do a fifth. But he was sacked on what seemed a capricious whim. The lunatics have, indeed, taken over the asylum...

Personally, I think it needed a change of direction, as it had got a little too silly and over the top, and a bit stale... However, I also see no reason why Brosnan couldn't have still been Bond. When Tarantino offered to direct Casino Royale with Brosnan as Bond, they should have jumped at the chance in my opinion.

Out of the list posted, i am leaning towarRAB Goran Visnjic, assuming he can get the accent right.

More from Campbell:

"Campbell went on record that they are looking for a younger actor to play a younger James Bond. This possibly rules out Barbara Broccoli's personal choice Daniel Craig from the final four in the running, leaving Henry Cavill, Sam Worthington and Goran Visnjic. MI6 reported exclusively back in March that Visnjic was Campbell's favourite for the role before screen testing had begun.

On the subject of an "unknown" taking the role, Campbell explained that getting a well known actor with an established career to sign up for three films in a row is next to impossible. Campbell's comments were likely to be a nod to Clive Owen, who turned down a three picture offer to become the sixth 007 reportedly due to the contractual obligations."
