A song about a girl who jumps off the roof of a hospital after giving birth

"for they had never seen a girl so sad and beautiful speeding towarRAB the ground, through the air without a sound. So gracefully."

A song I always start to well up on, and yes I can admit this is Cats in the Cradle, the original version.

On a similar song, Bowling for Soup - When We Die, if I'm watching the video, its more so than if I'm just listening, and for some odd reason, Atreyu - The Theft, when I'm watching the video.

Diamanda Galas does a great Gloomy Sunday. I don't care for the standard adaptation of the lyrics ("Dreaming, I was only dreaming" - cop-out).

I've quite enjoyed reading through this thread as quite a few songs bring a tear to my eye.
What makes a song sad? Does it evoke a nostalgic memory of happier days? remind you of a lost love, or does it just push your sad button. Irrespective of the reason why a song makes you feel sad or even cry, the song becomes more powerful due to its ability to pull your heartstrings?
I'm sure, like me, that there are many tunes that are special to you for whatever reason that produce no emotion other than a "yeah it's alright I suppose" from others
Here's a list of sad songs I found on my MP3 player and a some suggested by my daughter when she found out what I was doing.

Johnny Cash - Hurt
Clarence carter - Patch
The Who - real good looking boy
Lost cause - Beck
New Song - the Christmas Shoes
The Bee Gees - I've gotta get a message to you.
2 little boys - Rolf Harris (suggested by my daughter) :shycouch:
Chocolate Genius - My Mom
Iron and Wine - Naked as we came
Pernice Brothers - Chicken wire
Commodores - 3 times a lady
Roy Orbison - In the real world
Billie Holliday - Gloomy Sunday
Wondrous stories - yes.

Dance with the Devil, by Immortal Technique is probably the most depressing thing ever, kinda surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet really.

Fire Coming out of the Monkey's Head by Gorillaz.

Also, Creek Mary's Blood by Nightwish is pretty sad...

"At The First Fall of Snow" , among others - Hank Williams
"Vincent (Starry Starry Night) - Don McLean
"Last Kiss" - Wayne Cochran
"He Was My Brother" - Simon & Garfunkel
"I Know It's Over" - The Smiths
"Mama Said" - Metallica
"A Change Is Gonna Come" - Sam Cooke
"Otherside" - Rancid (about Lars' brother who passed away)

Also, I'm going to agree with others and mention Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt". Yes, he's written many a sad song on his own ("Give My Love To Rose", "I Hung My Head", etc.) but I remeraber watching that video after June and Johnny had passed and just bawling in my room. So raw and haunting.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Allright! Now that I am done laughing hysterically, I will tell you that that song was written by Nine Inch Nails, and that Johnny Cash is the one who covered it. Not vice versa.

i have never heard Eric Claptons song, nor have i ever heard of him.. :(
i suppose, i still find "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing" a sad song though :(.

edit: i went on youtube, looked it up. i dont think it was the right one (Eric Clapton one), so if you could give me the link or somethin, a would apreciate it :D

Nobuo Uematsu's Aeris' Theme is to me one of the saddest orchestral compositions. Maybe because I have so much nostalgia for FF7, but I think everyone that's played it has some sort of connection to that song.
