The road is calling. Learn on a Cafe 250? Rebel 250? Or dirt bike on dirt?

I've been a passenger since I've been potty trained and knew how to hold on... and I'm a darn good passenger IMHO. I've never learned how to drive one though (not sure why). I've been told (in addition to taking the safety courses) that I should learn on a cafe style 250, rather than something like a Rebel 250. Don't remember now why, considering I ultimately wanted to ride a cruiser. They even said that a 500 cafe would be ok too, because I wouldn't grow out of it as quickly. After discussing my desire to ride with my fiancé (who is not an experienced rider, but wants to be as well), he believes it would be best for me to learn on a dirt bike, in a nice soft field, or some dirt trail somewhere. Personally, I've been afraid of riding anything on a dirt trail... even a bicycle. I also believe that you should learn on the medium that you ultimately want to ride on. Maybe I'm wrong. Any thoughts? Should I follow his wishes, and learn on dirt first? Please help us resolve this disagreement!

Honestly the best starter bike out there is the Ninja 250R. I know you like cruisers but the cruiser 250's are just plain ole dangerous due to their lack of acceleration and braking ability. The ninja 250 has outstanding acceleration and braking yet its very light and easy to handle for a beginner.

You could start out riding on dirt. It would be softer and you can at least learn the fundamentals that way.

Well, the dirt will be a little softer to land on when you drop the bike, unless its here in the SE. where it is like concrete!-grin

I would say start your search for a bike by gathering ideas as to what you want to start on-new or used? If new go to dealerships and try them on for size, reach, seat height, riding position etc. If used visit some sellers and try them on for size. don't let anyone talk you into some small motorcycle because your a girl. You ain't pushing it, your riding it. and even if you do drop it,which you will, its all in the technic to picking a bike up rather than brawn. I have seen women 5' tall and 120 pds soaking wet pick up fully downed road kings and BMW K1200LT. both big heavy touring bikes.

Get what bike you want and learn on the street if you have no interest in dirt riding.
