The RING - good or bad ?

I saw this movie back in August the American one that is and I was shitting myself for 7 days because as soon as the film finished somebody rang the house phone and hung up when I answered it. I then realised that 7 days later my Dad told me it was him  LOL

I think it must be me but having watched the Japanese version I was expecting to be scared witless.

But nothing, not a flicker of fear. As a film its okay, however I wouldn't necessarily recommend it.

I therefore now need some advise. I've got the US version recorded off sky. Is it worth watching :)

I watched the start of the Japanese version but lost track as I couldn't read the subtitles when my eyes were covered :o so gave up.
Saw the US one on video and kepthaving to press stop to call my brother in to watch part of it with me.
The start with the two girls in the house terrified me more than anything. Was disturbed by the horse on the boat scene.
Really liked the way the kid understood that she would never stop.
Hadn't heard anything about the film before I saw it so I thought:
All Samara wanted was her story to be told so she could rest in peace. Got an awful fright when I realised te film wasn't over and she hadn't crawled out of the TV yet. All that night, anytime I closed my eyes, all I could see was her crawling out and then flickering and being closer.

I really like the American version, still with much respect of the Japanese. Unfor reading subtitles for an hour and a half makes it much less real and therefore less scary for me. I was scared out of my wits when i saw this movie and am still chilled when I watch it now (I bought it of course)

Photogarphy is beautiful and I have learned to love the cliched script and format of the beginning as it makes out to be some awful american teen trash when suddenly it grows up.

My sister says she gets really bored in the middle as nothing much seems to happen, but I really love this bit as its like a 'murder mystery' sort of investigation, which I found suspensful and creepy.

Love this film. :)

''One minor quibble is that the ending is unclear- throughout the film, there is some reference to the fact that the original source recording has improbable tracking, and then at the end it says that this is the reason they need to make copies of the tape. This didn't really seem a satisfying ending.''
But dont you see? Its NOT an ending. Its a wide gaping gap for the sequel (thankfully, not following the plot of Ring 2 in Japanese, that sucked, IMo)

the american version was dramatic nonsense, anyone who has seen the original jap version will tell you that. i urge people to watch all 3 japanese films especially ring0 which gives you more of an insight into sadako as an actual person, attending a drama class, and just how shy and lonely she was. i actually felt really sorry for her after it

I've just finished watching Ring on Channel 4 and I have to say it was an excellent film. Not something I would normally watch but having heard so much about it and as I'm bored on nights I thought it would pass some time!!! I was glued to the screen which hasn't happened in a long time and now I can't wait until tomorrow night to watch Ring 2.

I really though the extra scares was really not necessary in the US version. But there are certain things that a Hollywood movie neeRAB; and making slow movies is not one of them.

Sorry to rain on everyone's parade, but I preferred the remake to the original. The video in the remake was a lot creepier than the original and I liked that it went into more detail about the girl's past. Also, there's something about Japanese acting that just doesn't cut it for me.

I did like the original, I just liked the remake better.

A few moments in The Ring were rather Hollywoodised, guess that has to be expected.

On the whole though, it was a great remake, in certain aspects superior to the original Japanese movie.

The photography work was truly well done, great use of colours and camera angles.

Did you mean the aspects which were better are the ones mentioned abgove? If so, I agree. Ring may LOOK darker on the surface, however The Rings use of blues especially makes a nice tone.
