The RING - good or bad ?

I'm afraid I didn't think this was that good over-all. I have never seen the original Japanese version, but I have seen the prequel Ring 0. I think that seeing Ring 0 and finding that quite disturbing, spoiled the American remake for me.

I thought that the film started very well with the two young girls, the atmosphere was built up very well. But then it just seemed to disapear. I wouldn't say it was a bad film, but it could have been better.

First of all, hi! (this is my 1st post here!)
I love both versions of Ring, the original because it's a fantastic introduction to eastern cinema (by the way, check out 'Dark Water' and 'The Eye', if you liked Ring, you'll like these), and the remake deserves credit for the fact (in my opinion!) that it is equal to the original in quality, and respecting of it. How many remakes have we seen that are utter pants!
I have to agree with an earlier post about 'the forgotten sequel' Rasen (Spiral), it isn't very good, but worth a look if you're curious. If they were to go on to make the film of the third book (Loop) I may hunt that one down too!
If you havn't done so already, check out Ring 0, while it keeps you on the edge of your seat it's also utterly heartbreaking. You'll actually feel sorry for Sadako!

Well, I haven't seen the American version, but I thoroughly enjoyed the Japanese original. I loved it for the atmosphere it built up and the gradual rise in tension without the cheap hollywood "shock" tactics.

Thus, I'm rather reluctant to watch the American version since it will most probably be a totally different film for me. That is, it will lose the "gritty" feel and as such will not have the same atmosphere, especially if they "do" end up using cheap horror methoRAB and will simply end up being just another "hollywood shocker" for me...

She probably died the same way as the guy at the end ie. the girl commin out of the TV.

They are making a sequel to the US one, but it won't be a remake of the 2nd japanese one..

I say this AGAIN and AGAIN but no one listens...

JUST WATCH THE JAPANESE SEQUEL !!!!!!

I've got both the Japanese original and the US remake on DVD, and I agree the Jap version is best. Based on your recommendation, I shall buy the Jap sequel, cheers!

Please clarify correct name of sequel? I read somewhere that there was an unofficial sequel, and then an official sequel to put it right. Have you heard that?

Got 1st movie on CD-Wow - assume I can get the next one on there, if you could just tell me what I am looking for.

I preferred Pingu.

I've seen all the Japanese Ring movies and was not outraged by the US remake - compared with the stalk and slash nonsense America is constantly pumping out this was a superior product.

When you realise that 90% of Americans never travel beyond their own country, it's easy to understand why stupid US film companies seek to remake "foreign" films for their xenophobic audience... "Get Carter". The Italian Job", "Alfie" and even "The Office". Of course it's a pointless pursuit as their homely translations are almost always doomed to failure.

The US version of the Ring, I feel, is an exception. It actually stanRAB up as a film in it's own right. Not great - but not awful!

Just wondering: I've seen the Japanese version (fantastic film!) but not the remake... how close are they to each other plot-wise? Identical or have they changed lots in the American version?

As for the sequel, as far as I know there is one sequel (Ring 2) and a prequel (Ring 0)...

the remake only helped me understand the japanese original one more, the japanese original is far scarier, but i was too engrossed in trying to read the subtitles for it to have the full effect on me
