For those interested another Japanese Ring sequel "Spiral" is out here on DVD now, bought it when it came ou a few weeks back but haven't got round to watching it so can't say if it's any good or not.

Hi there,
I'd like to share with you what I thought about the movie. I think it was pretty cool, the story was terrifying, my wife was so frightened !!
I particularly appreciated the 3D lanRABcapes that surrounded the lighthouse, I found a link which explains it all.

Right a concise history of Ring (Ringu)

Movies
Ring (Ringu) - 1998
The movie based on the book The Ring by Suzuki Koji

The Spiral (Rasen) - 1998
The second book by Suzuki Koji, which is a follow up to the book Ring. Made by the same company as Ring at the same time as Ring, but by a totally different crew. Not very good by all accounts and is the "forgotten sequel"

Ring 2 (Ringu 2) - 1999
The sequel to the movie Ring.

Ring 0 (Ringu 0) - 2000
The prequel to the movie Ring.

Ring Virus - 1999
Another telling of the Original The Ring book, this time co-funded by Japanese and Korean film makers (the first film ever to be funded in this way) Tho, its considered to be a remake of the first film, with elements of the book put back into it.

The Ring - 2002
The US remake of "Ring"

The Ring 2 - 2004
The sequel to the US remake "The Ring". Not a remake of "Ring 2"

Books
Ring - 1991
Rasen - 1995
Loop - 1998
The Birthday - 1999

TV
Ring : The Complete Edition - 1995
made before the movies, more honest to the original book.

Ring : The Final Chapter - 1999
12 episode series, mixing book and movie storylines

and

Rasen : The Series - 1999
13 episode series, based on the book but wildly changing parts.

So all in all

Seven movies
four books
three TV shows

blimey, someone has done their homework!

Taped and watched The Ring/Ring 2 over the weekend and enjoyed them. Having seen the remake earlier this year i was pleased that the story varied enough to make it interesting to watch.

Overall i probably enjoyed the american one more, easier to watch, thought the video in the US was more spooky, scenes like the horse on the boat/the barn etc added to the story and built the atmosphere up.

As for The Ring 2 I didn't think much of it, seemed to be flogging a dead horse in parts.

Haven't seen the remake jakerik but I'm a big fan of the original Japanese version.

Have you seen them both? .....if so, is it worth renting the new one?

I thought the build up of tension as the film progressed was great, as was the scene where the little boy says that they weren't meant to help the little girl!! The scene were she comes outta the TV scared the crap out of me!!

One minor quibble is that the ending is unclear- throughout the film, there is some reference to the fact that the original source recording has improbable tracking, and then at the end it says that this is the reason they need to make copies of the tape. This didn't really seem a satisfying ending.

I preferred the US remake, althought thought the TV scene where she comes out was done better in the Japanese version.

The remake had a more believable relationship between the reporter and her ex and all the acting was a major improvement in the remake.

IT WAS TERRIBLE"

Look at the size of the well cover at the end.
It covers the rim of the well, rather than fitting in to it. Therefore if it was put on and you were down the well you wouldn't be able to see a ring of light - the whole point of the story!!

***SPOILER ALERT DO NOT READ IF U HAVENT SEEN THE FILM****

The reason why they had to copy the tape was to stay alive! You were only killed 7 days after wqtchin the tape if you did not copy it and show that copy to someone else. I suppose its like a deadly chain-letter ie. if you do not carry it on, then you die!

i havent seen the japenese version yet..... would like to tho....

i thought the film was good for the fact it kept u guessing a little to what happened etc. i thought the part were she came outta the telly was brilliant... i was sat in the cinema laughing (dont ask why.... i love horror films and nothing greatly seems to shock me in this film) main reason for the laughing was the fact of the girl sat to the left of me jumping literally out of her seat and screaming!! :D

but i did like the film and as sum1 already wrote thought the scene were the little lad points out that they shouldnt have helped her outta the 'dark place' was excellant.

but all in all i did like the film :D

Boing - bringing old thread back to life. See people do use search.

I watched the remake on Sky Movies last night. I was a bit disapointed by the Japanese version as I'd heard great things about it, but I thought the US version was (suprisingly) better. Both had the same problem though: it starts as a horror, which it does well, but then turns into a murder mystery, and then tries to turn back into a horror at the end, which doesn't really work.

I was suprised by how faithful to the original it was, even down to some of the locations and sets. I'd have to say this is the best remake I've ever seen, even though the faults of the original have been faithfully remade with it.

Both the original and the hollywood versions were quite good, although I wasn't quite sure what the whole 'horse on boat' thing was about in the remake...

going totally OT for a second - just noticed that kacas has been banned? what happened - it's not like him to get into trouble like this...

on a similar vein to Ring, has anyone seen the thai film 999-9999? i suppose you could say its a bit like the telephone version of Ring. call this number after midnight and you'll come to a grisly end. brilliant film.

The Japanese Ring movies are massively superior to the second rate "pretty people" Hollywood version. I bet the Japanese producers are wincing as they see it.....
