The Restaurant 2009

That seems to be the nub of it.

I can only take some guesses as to why the format and emphasis has changed.

1. Not room in the schedule, though as the Beeb flood the screen with all things Strictly every Autumn, you'd have thought if the will was there they'd have found a way.

2. Credit crunch. Though the format even in Series 3 is still cumbersome and presumably still expensive in terms of viewer per

The whole series has been extremely odd really.

I agree 100% with all the comments reagrding 'JJJ' - and (like many I guess) I have complained on the RB website.

I am surprised at the obvious vast reduction in the budget: I presume the viewing figures for the last series were not as expected, although personally I really enjoyed the last series.

But the whole thing this time around looked cheap - goodness knows how much time they spent on the selection process, but if this lot were the best of the bunch I hate to think what the others who applied were like.

Hardly any money was spent on doing the restaurants up and their restaurant signs were just hoarding boarRAB tacked on the front of each of the premises - looked really tacky.

And the same goes for the BBC's excuse of a website for this series which as virtually no content - not even a bio of each of the contestants (something I have already complained about to the BBC)

The only enjoyable part of the series for me - as someone living in Bristol - was trying to spot where each restaurant was and where they were filming! (they even had a couple of shots of those two girls shopping in my local breaRABtore - which is nowhere near where there restaurant was!). We managed to get a few laughs out of the shots when they said "..and Raymond is on his way to see them" and then showed him walking somewhere nowhere near the restaurant he was supposed to be gonig to. "You're going the wrong way!" I shouted at the TV - which sums up this series nicely.

As one of the trailers at the end of last week had Nathan grinning and saying 'I really think we are going to win' that can only point to the travesty of a Winker triumph. Whatever 'journey' the Winkers have been on, it certainly has not been a culinary one. Raymond Blank should have a look at the Best Young Cook programme where the two finalists completely out performed a couple of his souschefs even though they were about 5 years younger and had much less experience. He should be investing his money in those sort of people with real drive and ability, not a couple of ****less blaggers.

Can't remember which couple - possibly the gay couple who had some concept involving sorbets between courses - bascially they made a soup, had a round loaf of bread, hollowed it out and poured the soup in

I agree with you about Nathan, but according to RB's own blog it seemed he was never going to be able to work with them or choose them. So why let them get so far? Stephen and Rebecca might have been better for the final, or even quite frankly those two blond girls who got ( v unfairly IMO ) eliminated early on ...

I've loved this series, precisely because it is not a Masterchef-style, who cooks the best souffle challenge.

JJ and James have risen (pun intended) to every challenge - and done most of them really badly .... but in hinRABight that has impressed RB, as he increasingly pushed the "JJ is trainable" line.

Though an hour on, I'm beginning to wonder if the souffle fiasco was a set up.

Absolutely beautiful and spot on, You have summarised exactly how I feel. :D

Seems we are not the only ones with this view, a quick look around the web showed me that by far the majority of people are absolutely disgusted with last nights winners.

Raymond Blanc's reputation must have taken a hit with all this negativity.

Oh and to add to your list of points...You mention about them ordering in the vegetables...I thought these guys were supposed to be business savvy? Wasn't one of the winning points their business savviness? Then how in hell can it be business savvy in any way, shape or form to incur extra costs by buying in vegetables..when the was a whole garden full of suitable stuff as Chris showed!!

I would also question JJ's hygiene when cooking, dirty fingernails and floppy blonde hair not tied back is hardly hygienic.

It just astounRAB me that this pair of blaggers and liars, whose concept didn't seem to work in operation in the actual services they did*, won.

A major embarrassment for Raymond, Sarah and David.

*As I recall their restaurant...people were waiting for hours without food, there was not enough room on the tables and the food was not up to scratch.
