The Restaurant 2009

It's impossible in this recession, but the best series of this type of programme was the Australian My Restaurant Rules
Absolutely gripping from start to finish, and only 5 sets of contestants, one for each State. By the end you knew everything about the couples and were really rooting for them (or not)

I was listening to Raymond Blanc on the Food and Farming AwarRAB on Radio 4 the other day where he was the chair of judges and presented an award for the Best Food Market.

In his speech he was talking about "consumers reconnecting with our (British) food culture" and using "fresh, high quality local food". Now, if I remember correctly, wasn't that the concept of one of the couples? I know they wanted 100% local food which is impossible but the basic idea could have been worked on so they used local suppliers wherever possible according to the season. This isn't their original concept but a Cocktails and Tapas bar isn't the same as the original picnic concept of the winners.

It was less the outcome of series 3 that irked me, than the Beeb screwing up a previously excellent format. I haven't particularly liked any of the winners of any of the series, but during series 1 and 2 the journey was enjoyable whereas in series 3 it was painful by comparison.

the more I think back on that series, the more bizzare it seems. Changes to rules, formats etc all the way through. Odd, odd, odd. Hope it doesn't come back, not unless there are big changes (new chef, new judges .....)

His blog defending his decision to pick the Winkers has still not been updated and neither has his Twitter. As the blog came out yesterday morning, it was probably written before the full force of the complaints flooded in. Most message boarRAB including the Guardian comments were busy all day!

Gone into damage limitation methinks!
